  • hi,

In 1855 there is a Michael KELLY living in Glen Townland in Dunmore.

There are also O'NEILLs in the same Townland.

In those days people usually married locals, travel was difficult.

In 1901 both families are still present in the area.

  • hi,

re: I can't find a marriage or birth for them in Dunmore

There are no official records of Births or Marriages before 1864 for Catholics in Ireland. They were not recorded.

There are marriage and birth records from 1833 for Dunmore RC Church.

Try contacting the Church at DUNMORE.

Priest: Fergal Cunnane PP, Parochial House,
    Dunmore 093-38124.
    Email: newsletter@dunmoreparish.ie

The eldest child was born in 1835, so the parents probably married in 1833/4.

I cannot find a Townland called Clonfean/Cloonfean, there is a CLOONFANE though in the Parish of Dunmore which is possibly the right one.

In 1855 there were five Michael  KELLYs in Dunmore, and there were also O'NEILs in the area.

The townland of Cloonfane is about 4 miles WNW of Dunmore town and, at its northernmost point, is about a half-mile from the Mayo border (only Cloonbrusk townland interposes).

The civil parish of Dunmore is composed of at least six discrete parcels. The townland of Glen in this parish is located in one of the southern-ish outlying parcels, 5 miles SW of Dunmore town.

This places Glen about 5 miles due south of Cloonfane.

  • hi,

There is a Mailing list for most places, including Galway where people are trying to trace their ancestors.

You can ask questions and if someone knows the answer they will probably reply to your enquiry.

I always find that the best places to hang out, are where other people are looking for family as well.

You can register for the Galway emails on the link below.
    http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/intl/IRL/IRL-GALWAY.html

There is also a KELLY mailing list, but I don't know how active it is.

There are only 18 messages for KELLYs in Galway, you can register for the email and search the archives at the bottom of the same page.

    http://lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/index/surname/k/kelly.html

There are people looking for KELLY ancestors from Galway at the following website.

    http://www.connorsgenealogy.net/galway/galwaysurnamesAtoL.html

None of them mention CLOONFANE, but you can add your enquiry to the list - you never know you might strike lucky.

Also try using Google to find relevant information.

    e.g. search for...

    "genealogy + galway + cloonfane + kelly"

I find family research a bit like fishing, you have to scatter your bait far and wide to MAYBE get a bite.

    Good luck in your search.
