Hi  I am looking for anything on a the family of my Great grandfather Daniel Kelly.  Daniel was born in 1842 in County Leitrim. His parents were Owen and Anne Kelly. Daniel emigrated to Australia in 1865 on the ship "Napier" settlng in the Colony of Victoria. Daniel married Margaret Costello in Melbourne Victoria in 1869.  They had four children between 1870 and 1875.  No record has been found of when or where Daniel died.

Margaret Costello was born in 1848 in County Clare. Her parents were Michael and Johanna Costello.  Margaret emigrated to Australia in 1866 on the ship "Golden Empire". No record has been found of when or where Margaret died.

I searches the subscription site Roots Ireland and located a September 21 1838 baptismal record in the Killanummery RC church. Parents were Owen Kelly and Anne Kelly. No sponsors shown. Usually the mother's maiden name was shown so Anne may have been born Kelly. Other siblings were Thomas 1836 James 1841 Patrick 1843 Michael 1845. All records showed Anne Kelly for the mother

The parents were married April 30 1835 in Killanummery. Anne Kelly was the bride

The 1857 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing showed two Owen Kelly records in Killanummery civil parish. One in Garvagh townland and the other in Greaghnafarna townland. One of the two would be your ancestor.    https://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/leitrim/killanummery.htm

I also located a August 7 1846 baptismal record for a Margaret Costelloe with father Michael Costelloe and mother Judith Couny. Judith and Johanna were sometimes used interchangebly. The RC parish was Ogonnelloe and they lived in Carrowbawn.

If this is the correct family then the parents had the following children in addition to Margaret although at least two appeared to die young. Mary 1844 Mary 1848 Catherine 1854 John 1855 Mary 1857 Timothy 1859 Joan 1861.

I did not locate a marriage record.

I looked at the 1855 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Ogonnelloe civil parish and there was a Michael Costelloe in Ballynagleragh townland. Likely Carrowbawn was a local placename and the official name of the townland was Ballynagleragh.

    G'Day Roger

Many thanks for your great research and finding me valuable records. Your efforts greatly increases my knowledge of Annie's Irish ancestors. In response, I have raised a fact sheet titled "Annie's Parents". I would appreciate you having a look at what I have documented and being brutal in your critique. In particular, my inserting Daniel's and Margaret's names in their respective parent's list of children. I will defer updating my Ancestry.com "Lyons Family Tree" until I get your response.

If I may impose on you further: In the absence of a birth record for Annie Kelly, her physical appearance raises the question - was she part aboriginal?; That is; was her mother an aboriginal. Not an outlandish idea as in the early years of Australian colonisation, European males taking advantage of promiscuous young aboriginal females became such an issue that the Colony of Victoria introduced legislation requiring all babies born of mixed race to be removed from the mother at birth and placed in care. Records of where those babies were placed were either lost or destroyed. Annie's lack of a birth record, no Costello DNA match and her physical appearance support asking that question. Does the attached photo of Annie resemble a typical 60 year Irish female?

    I await your response

A couple of comments on your family history. First, Daniel Kelly was born in 1838 not 1842. Second there is an inconsistency in Note 2. Anne was married in 1903 but she listed that she was born 1800?

On your second question, I don't live in Ireland and don't have any history with aboriginal people. My sense is that picture looks like a Caucasian individual.

    G'Day again

Thank you for being gentle in your comments; Re Annie being an aboriginal, you must have been talking to Ann, my wife. She thinks I've got too much imagination. Not really; after many searchers over the past 10 years, I'm clutching at straws. Thanks also for pointing out the typo; I've corrected the 1800 birth date to 1880

On my 1842 birth date; the 1842 was based on his 1869 marriage record which has his age as 27 and I had found an arrival record which matched that age. However your location of an 1838 baptism record trumps both my cards. I have downloaded the baptism record and would appreciate you reviewing my best attempt at a transcription:

    "B Daniel Son of Anne &amp & ? Kelly"

"Sp James Kelly and Ann Kelly"

Finally, for some light reading, I've attached "Annie's Life" which I wrote in 2019 after traveling down to Bunyip in Victoria and finding Annie's first child's grave site.
