I'm trying to find out if Kilbegha (on marriage record) is now known as Kilbeagh.  My ancestor (Gt, Gt, Grandfather) John Tiernan (father Pat) from Lunnagh (?) was married to a Catherine Corley (father Antony) from Kilaturley at the above chapel by John O'Grady C C on 27th March 1872.  ( I think???)

  • I think it is likely that the place is Kilbeagh, Lowpark, Swinford County Mayo.

  • Hi,

Yes, the RC parish is called Kilbeagh (AKA Charlestown)....you will see some spelling variation in the records. For example, Killaturly is to correct spelling for Catherine Corley's residence, and Sonnagh is the name of the town land for John Tiernan. If you notice the letter "S" in the word spinster, it is the same shape as in the word Sonnagh...also, the "o" looks like a "u". There is no town land in the Kilbeagh parish called Lunnagh.

    Regards,

    Carolyn
