My gr gr gr grandparents were Roderick Kilduff (steward) and Catherine Kima (Keena) who may have lived in Ferbane around 1800. Roderick Kilduff was still alive in 1835 when he had a headstone erected for his granddaughter Sarah Cruise on 28 Nov 1835 in the Old Killeigh RC cemetery. Can anyone please tell me if there are any records for the cemeteries near Ferbane. Roderick Kilduff and Catherine had at least one daughter, Sarah Kilduff who was born about 1800 according to her death certificate in Australia. I would be keen to know if there are any Church records that go back to era. Thank You Marie M.

  • Hello Marie,

thanks for your message. While the name Kilduff is not found so often (which is good!), the period of time you are searching for is difficult as there are very few surviving records pre-1820-1840.

There are hardly any church records that go back to 1800 -- do you know what religion Roderick Kilduff (steward) and Catherine Kima (Keena) were?

I will have to check if there are any records for the cemeteries near Ferbane. Have you already tried the Irish Midlands Ancestry for assistance - a fee will apply but an initial search is ?10 or so. Here are their contact details: Irish Midlands Ancestry, Bury Quay, Tullamore, CO. Offaly. Phone: +353 (0) 57 9321421 Email: info@offalyhistory.com. Please say we sent you...they have many gravestone transcriptions.

In the neighbouring parish of Gallen, there is a still a family of Kilduffs in Lumcloon in 1911: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/results.jsp?census_year=1911&surname=kilduff&firstname=&county=King%27s+Co.&townland=&ded=&age=&sex=&search=Search&relationToHead=&religion=&education=&occupation=&marriageStatus=&birthplace=&language=&deafdumb=&marriageYears=&childrenBorn=&childrenLiving=

  • Hi Jack McDonald

Thank you for your comments on Roddy Kilduff headstone 2/3/2000. I suppose I now need to try and find some more Kilduffs in Ferbane around Census 1901 or 1911.

  • IHello,

I have ust been able to confirm my relationship to Rowland Cruice and Sarah Kilduff through a DNA test. My GG grandmoher, Bridget Cruise was their daughter.

Does anyone have a copy of Sarah's death certificate in 1880 in Queensland.

If not I am going to order it.

I am hoping DNA will further my research.

I am on Ancestry, My Heritage and 23and Me

  • Hello Cai

You posted a message on XO on 14 Dec 2019 regarding your connection to your GG grandmother Bridget Cruise who was daughter of Rowland Cruise and Sarah Kilduff. You were looking for the death certificate of Sarah who died in 1880. My great grandmother Fanny Cruise who was baptised in Parish of Rahan in January 1841 but I have never found Bridget. She was listed on the death certificate of her mother Sarah. I have details of my Fanny who came to Australia with her mother Sarah, sister Sarah and brother Bernard Cruise on the Norman Morrison arriving Brisbane 20 Dec 1863. Hopefully you will see this message and we can share information. Did Bridget go to USA?

    Thank You

    Marie

  • Dear Marie,

My ancestor, Bridget Cruise was born c 1833. She married Michael Kearney and lived in Bolart, near Clara in Offaly. They had at least five children, I descend from her daughter Francesca (Frances/Fanny). Michael and Bridget stayed in Ireland. I have had DNA matches with descendants of Richard and Peter Cruise. They are possibly siblings of Rowland Cruise.

As there are so many Bernard Cruises I think there is a high possibility that Rowland's father was a Bernard.

Fanny's brother Bernard married in Offaly in 1866. If he is the Bernard that went to Australia he only stayed a short while.

I am happy to share any information.

    Regards

  • Hello again Cai

I have been searching for Bridget for a long time and it is great news that it appears I have at last found her. Her mother Sarah Kilduff, daughters Sarah, Fanny and Eliza came out to Australia with son Bernard on the Norman Morrison arriving in the heat of 20 Dec 1863. Bernard did return to Ireland and married Lizzie Farrell. Rody, the other son of Sarah Kilduff came out earlier on the Erin-Go-Bragh arriving August 1862. I am descended from Fanny who married a Laurence Fagan. I am happy to share any information I have found on the other children of Rowland Cruise and Sarah Kilduff. My email is marie_marinelli@hotmail.com

Hope to hear from you soon Cai
