Hello, I am searching for information on my great great grandparents, William Kiley and Margaret Russell. William was born in about 1806 and Margaret was born in about 1817. They married in about 1839 and left Ireland as assisted passengers on the Navarino in 1839. On the shipping list Margaret's parents were listed as Matthew and Johanna Russell and Williams's parents are listed as Seamus(?) and Catherine. Both were said to have been natives of Cork but in Williams's will he left money for prayers to be said for his intention at Mount Mellary Church which is in Waterford so maybe he came from that county. Any information  would be appreciated.

The subscription site Roots Ireland has a February 3 1839 marriage between a William Kiely and a Margaret Russell. The RC parish was Dromcolliher and Broadford in Co. Limerick. Not sure if this record is for your ancestors but the year and names of the bride and groom match.

I did not see any baptismal records for any children of the couple.

Do you think the marriage record is for your ancestors?

    Hi Roger,

Thanks for your prompt reply to my query about my Kiley ancestors. I am pretty sure from the information you have provided that these are my ancestors as the names and dates match so well. Actually on Margaret's death certificate it states that she was a widow when she married William.  Her first husband was E.Kiley and that marriage took place about two years before she married William. I assume that E. Kiley was probably Williams's brother and that he must have died soon after their marriage. There would have been no children born to William and Margaret in Ireland as they left for Australia in May,1839 which would have been just a couple of months after their wedding. After arriving in NSW they joined Williams's older brother Patrick at a rural town called Coolac and their first two children were born there. They were later able to select a large area of land at Spring Creek, near Tumut, NSW where they built up a successful farming property and went on to have six more children. William died in 1882 and Margaret in 1897 and both are buried in the Pioneer Cemetery in Tumut.
    Regards,
    Carol

Glad I found the correct record. The RC parish of Dromcolligher and Broadford is in southwest Co. Limerick on the border with Co. Cork. It is possible that they lived on the Cork side of the border but the marriage was in Limerick. Marriages were normally held in the bride's parish.
