hi,
My paternal grandmother's family were from county Mayo. Around 1851, my great great grandfather James Killion and his elder brother Michael went to work in Blackburn in England. They were the children of Thomas Killion to his first wife (name unknown but there were half siblings back in Ireland).
James married Anne Mullaney and their son Austin was my great grandfather. Austin later went to work in the shipyard in Belfast and married there (Bridget Doran). Killion as a spelling was not common in Mayo in the 19th century, the only Thomas Killion I can find in Mayo in Griffith's Valuation is living in the townland of Lurgan in Annagh civil parish.
Whilst the 1851 census material in Ireland was mainly destroyed, there does remain a census extract which records the family of Thomas Killion above (second marriage but with the surname spelt as Killeen), with a James and Michael listed as absent. The census extract was linked to a pension application much later. Any Killions still there? with any family oral tradition of a link to Blackburn. In Blackburn the surname ended up being spelt Killean.
Thanks.
Brian.

Brian:
I located two death records for Thomas and Bridget.
Thomas Killeen May 20 1866 age 68 informant Bridget Killeen
Bridget Killeen April 30, 1898 age 80. Informant Andy Flatley son in law
There was a Flatley family in Lurgan in the 1901 census. http://census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Mayo/Loughanboy/Lurgan/1590023/ possibly Bridget was a daughter of Thomas.
FYI Annagh RC records start in 1851.

Roger, thanks for taking the time to reply with information. I'm travelling with work but will get a proper look later. The person who applied for the 1851 census extract, post 1908, had a connection with a Flatley family so hopefully links in.
Brian.
