Thank you.John gorman my ggrandfather's death certificate in the US indicates he was from Mitchelstown. I have found Catholic baptism records for all 8 of his siblings in Ireland, in County Cork. One indicates Kilshanna. Don't know what that is, please help.

There is a Kilshanny townland in Brigown civil parish which is the same parish where Mitchelstown is located.

  • Hi Roger, I thought Mitchelstown was the smallest unit., therefore the townland. So I guess I'm wrong, thanks for straightening me out. So I look for records for Kilshanna?

Kilshanny is an average size townland (377 acres). Mitchelstown was the "big town" in that area of Co. Cork.

Not sure what records you are looking for.

The 1852 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Brigown civil parish shows a Catherine Gorman in Kilshanny. Likely she was a widow.

I checked the 1901 census and there were no Gormans listed, however, the Mitchelstown Workhouse was located in Kilshanny.
