    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I searched on the free site www.irishgeneaogy.ie for a baptismal record in Drimoleague or a civil birth record with not success. Do you have a record that shows her birth/baptism in 1864? I did find a Samuel Kingston in 1860 (baptism) who may be a brother. Let me know.

  • Hi Roger,

Thank you so much for searching.  I don't have a birth or baptismal record on her.  She did have a brother, Samuel, who was born in 1860.  My frustrations in researching Irish genealogy is the commonality of first names.  So many Johns, Marys - how do you know which one is THE one?  I would love to find some decendants of her  brothers, sisters who remained in Ireland and may have more information, family Bibles, etc.  She also had 6 other siblings, John( born 1856), Paul,(born 1864 ) Margaret(born 1857), Mary(born 1868), Nancy(born 1866) and Charles(born 1861).

Thank you so much.  It is nice to meet you!

Below are transcriptions from the www.irishgenealogy.ie  site (free). The first is the record for Samuel followed by a possible marriage record for the parents followed by the only Catherine Kingston record I could locate in 1872. Is it possible she made herself older?  Records for other children may also be on the site.

Below is a link to the 1872 civil birth record for the Catherine Kingston from Drimoleague with parents John and Mary. Do not be concerned about the birth date being later than the baptismal date. Parents were required to civilly register their children's birth and if they were late in registering they made the official date later than the real date in order to avoid a fine.

  • Roger,

Thank you for all the information.  It is confusing because the Death Record here in Vemont for my grandmother says clearly that her date of birth was September 14, 1874.  All the birth records for her  children have her name spelled with a "K" rather than a "C".  This makes me wonder if the Catherine Kingston in the 1872 civil birth record is my grandmother. Did she change it to a "K" at some point?  I have no idea and any that might know are dead.  But what about the different birth dates?  This seems a gnarly knot I may not be able to unravel.

Thank you once again for your help.

The 1872 record may not be for your grandmother but it is in the right area with the right parents. Many emigrants changed their birth date when they came to America for various reasons.

  • In my extended family I have a Catherine Kingston born to John and Mary Kingston but in 1872, not 1864. Her siblings had almost the same names that you mention, but she had no brother Charles. I think that Catherine's grandfather, Sam Kingston, was a brother to my great-great-grandfather, Paul Kingston, but I have no records to prove that - only a few puzzle pieces. The family I am referring to lived in Northfield, Vermont. Are you still looking for information on Catherine? My connection comes through John Kingston's wife Mary. Her parents were Samuel Kingston and Margaret Sullivan. On an early death record for one of Sam's children, the mother's name was given as Catherine, but as so often happened, the informant didn't always have correct names. That was probably the case here since Margaret never came to the US so her grandchildren would not have met her. All records in Ireland give her name as Margaret.    Jan

  • Hi Jean!

I just posted about my Kate Regan who married George Kingston in 1860.  I feel sure we must also be related to your Katherine born 1864 (maybe your Katherine's dad, John was George's brother?) because Kate and George's children had similar names as your John and Mary: Mary 1860, Ellen 1864, Paul 1867, Anne called "Nance" 1870 and John 1872.

Have you taken a DNA test? And if so, where?  I am on Ancestry and My Heritage +.
