Good afternoon all.

I am a descendant of the Kirby family who lived in the cottages in Shanaghobarravane in the 1800s. I have been told there are still some Kirbys living in the area and I am hopefully coming to Ennis next week on holiday  and was wondering whether any of the Kirbys are on this site

My grand father was William Kirby born in 1876 to John and Mary Kirby ( Sullivan )  Apart from that my knowledge is very limited when it comes to this side of my family tree.

Thank you so much

  • Hi Marion,

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Shanaghobarravane is a townland in the parish of Lislee in the very southern part of County Cork

I had a quick look to see if I could locate a baptism for William Kirby born about 1876 with parents John and Mary and found the civil birth record of William.

William was born on the 4th of March 1876 in the townland of Meelmane in Lislee county Cork, father John mother Mary Sullivan, see record https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_retur…

The 1901 census shows the family living at the address house nr.5 townland of Shanaghobarravane in Butlerstown county Cork, it shows both parents and William and his 3 siblings, his fathers name on the census was John Con (John Cornelius Kirby) http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Cork/Butlerstown/Shana…

It is possible that some of William siblings remained at the same place a good website for research is www.rootsireland,ie it is a subscription site and of course the free site for civil and church records www.irishgenealogy.ie

I know of at least one Kirby family living in Butlerstown near Bandon county Cork, maybe a visit to this village and a chat to the locals might tell you more

    Hope this helps a bit

Thank you all for your replies regarding my intended visit to Shanaghobarravane to see the place where my grandparents originated. Anne Marie, you have got the right family and William is my grandfather.   Thank you Jane for the offer of help if I need it.  I just wish I knew whether the house is still there and how I could identify which house it would be as all the information I have got is that it's number 5 Shanaghobarravane  but will still be nice to visit the village  I'm really excited about it

    All best wishes  Marion

  • Hi Marion:

You should be able to identify the house.  Be sure to bring your documentation with you when you visit the area, and even check with the local post office.  They would defiinitely know of the area and most likely the houses contained in it.

Have a wonderful trip.  If you need any further assistance, you can contact Anne-Marie or myself here at the message board via this thread.

    All the best,

    Jane.

  • Dear Marion -

I stumbled across your post while rummaging around Google ahead of a trip I am making next summer from my home in Chicago.  Did you meet up with Theresa and Mags?  I had a wonderful visit with them 10 years ago now with my extended family (all Kirby descendents) and understand their families are still are living there.

I too am a Kirby of Shannaghobarravane descent - my grantfather, Cornelius Kirby, was born in 1906 to Patrick and Annie (Sullivan) Kirby who also resided in one of the houses on the farmland.  We must be related.  I have a fairly good familiarity with the Kirby tree, at least for the US.  I'd love to learn more if you care to share.

  • Hello Patrick.  How great to hear from you regarding the the Kirby family from Shanaghobarravan .  I did visit the town land in April this year and oh I so want to go back there again. It might be on the cards for 2019.  I haven’t managed to do any research recently due to health issues etc etc you know how it is , but my aim after the new year is to settle back into it again so we may be able to share info to each other  .  Are you on Facebook Patrick ?  I look forward to hearing from you .  My email address is   marlon-jones@hotmail.co.uk if you need it   Best Wishes  Marion Jones from Hereford UK
