Hello,

My Great Grandfather, Michael Cronin b. 4 Sept 1854 is from Knockacappul according to his Catholic baptism certificate for Diocese of Kerry, Parish of Boherbue. (Barony of Duhallow). - Data is from Casey collection and Catholic Parish registers.

His parents are John Cronin and Margaret Herlihy.  b? d?

In county Cork there are 2 Knockacappul Townlands  (Liter and Wallstown)

My question is which Knockacappul would the family be from?

(According to google maps there is also a Knockacappul SW of Dromtariffe. I just returned from Irleland and that's the location I visited)

Thank you for any information and guidance.

The area you visited is the correct area. The Knockacappul you visited is a local place name or possibly a sub-townland. I believe the official townland is Knocknanagh in the civil parish of Kilmeen. Actually there are three Knocknanagh townlands: Commons, East and West.

I think I found a possible civil birth record for a younger sister to Michael Cronin. See the sixth record at the link for an 1868 birth record for a Margaret Cronin.  https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1868/03434/2260775.pdf

  • Chipstercary,

I found a record on Roots Ireland for another sibling:   Denis Cronin, 20 May 1864, Knockenaugh, Boherbue. Parents: John Cronin & Margaret Herlihy. Sponsor: Mary Callaghan.

  • BTW, the above record is from county Cork, not Kerry.

  • Hello,

My sincere apologies for the late thank you. Your comments are greatly appreciated.

    I did have a follow-on question.

    1. I think I’m hung up on the actual location of “Knockacappul” given that there are so many Cronin’s, the family’s occupation as Tinsmith’s and trying to link the births to an area.

(It seems odd that google maps is identifying an area as “Knockacappul”, yet townlands.ie doesn’t recognizing that as at least a townland or sub-townland?  I can’t locate any historical maps that show it as a townlands or sub-townland in that area. :o(

    1. @ Roger Thank you for the find on Margaret.

I did see that record previously and the names match however I have a marriage document for Margaret for 1879.  The record you list she would have been 10 y/o at marriage.  Possible?

I believe my GG Aunt, Margaret Cronin Rahilly was b.~ 1859 (Unk location) d. Awnskirtaun, Doocarrig, County Kerry. (Marriage 5 March 1879) Her witnesses were Michael Cronin and Cornelius Cronin who I believe to be her brothers.

I have DNA match to Rahilly/Sullivan.

    1. @Carolyn Then you for the find on Dionysius / Denis.  I do believe he is Michael’s brother.

    4.  *** Any suggestions on locating my GG Grandparents, John Cronin & Margaret Herlihy, BMD & graves?

There is a grave marker I found for a John Cronin b.1801 and Margaret Herlihy b. 1826 but those birth dates would indicate they are having kids in their 40’s.

THANK YOU again for your assistance and for your volunteer work!

FYI - I found this site after a meeting with Paddy Waldron, a volunteer in your group. when in Ireland a few weeks ago.  Paddy has been helping my brother-in-law with Co Claire research.

  • Chip:

According to the free site, irishgenealogy.ie  the marriage of John Cronin and Margaret Herlihy occurred in the RC parish of Rathmore in Co. Kerry. Both Margaret and John were from Coome likely Coom from the civil parish of Kilcummin. One word of caution is that the records indicates (Assumed). I went to the parish register for Rathmore on the NLI site and 1839 is not included.

    I also saw baptismal record for Johanna March 15 1857 Dennis December 28 1862 Michael September 4 1854 another Denis Mary 23 1864 Margaret April 18 1868 Catherine April 1 1860 (Assumed).

Can you share the record of the 1879 marriage for Margaret Cronin?

If John and Margaret were married in 1839 (and there is some doubt since no baptismal records for children show up for the 1840s) then you will not find baptismal records for them if they were born 1820 or earlier.

Finding death records will take some work since the names John Cronin and Margaret Cronin are very common.

  • Hi Roger,   Thank you again for your comments.

I attached the marriage documents for Margaret Cronin to John Rahilly,

I also included a  VT. newspaper article of the obit of "Ellen" Cronin (not Allen) that supports Ellen as sibling to Margaret and Michael.

Agree with your assessment on the 1839 marriage. The gap between marriage and first children seems too big.

Also the Rathmore marriage location doesn't seem to fit and then having children baptized in Boherbue seems odd.

    Again many thanks -

  • Chip:

So the marriage was in March 1878, I was looking at the 1879 records.

Rathmore in Kerry is just across the county line from Boherbue.

Maybe Knockacappul is part of the townland of Knockyrourke which is shown on the 1878 marriage record.
