My great grandmother, Bridget Hoban Langan (b.c. 1809, Mayo) died in Ratheskin in 1900.  Her daughter, Catherine, lived in Ratheskin at that time and appears in both the 1901 and 1911 census.  In 1901, she had a nephew, Thomas Langan (b.c. 1880, Mayo), living with her.  I cannot find any other information on Thomas.

The two known brothers of Catherine had both gone to the U.S. before 1880.  I would like to find out more information about Thomas and his father.

My great grandmother was Margaret T. Langan (b. 1857, Mayo), who came to Muskegon, Michigan,  in about 1876.

 Any suggestions,

Steve McDonald.  mcdonald@san.rr.com

  • My great, great grandmother was Mary Anne Langan, born of Kilfian Parish in 1832, but I don't have the month and day; and died in 1922, in America where she was married to Henry O'Hara, of Balina, but I don't know what Parish Henry was from. I also don't know if she met Henry in Ireland and both immigrated to New York, America in 1848 together, or separately and met in America. Any help in directing me where to dig a little deeper in finding her roots, would be greatly appreciated.

The Kilfian baptismal records on the subscription site Roots Ireland are only available from 1826-1836 and then there is a large gap until 1900. There are four Mary Langan baptismal records in the parish in 1826 1828 1835 1836. I don't know if you have any info that would allow you to confirm one of these records.

December 3 1826 (born November 25) father John Langan mother Bridget Hoban lived in Moneen

March 30 1828 (born March 20) record shows father James Langan mother Bridget Lally lived in Annaghmore

April 12 1835 (born April 10) record shows father Martin Langan mother Mary Preston lived in Kincon

March 15 1836 (born March13) record shows father Thomas Langan mother Anne Loftus lived in Anagh

The only Henry O'Hara record I see is June 16 1833 (born June 14) father Timothy O'Hara mother Bridget Manly. The RC parish was Crossmolina which is to the west of Ballina.

I see that you did not get a response from our volunteer in the area. I looked for Thomas Langan civil birth records from 1875-1880 and did not find a good lead. There were two possible records but I ruled out both of them since I found them in the census with their families. Maybe Thomas was born in America went back to Ireland and the census info was incorrect regarding born in Mayo.
