I have just learned that my 3x great grandmother was Johanna Lannan and her grave marker in Prince Edward Island , Canada indicates that she came from Wexford, Ireland. The parish is unknown. She would have been born in the early 1800's in Ireland.

Either in Ireland, Newfoundland, or PEI she married Edmund Walsh who I believe was from County Waterford. Based on the 1881 Canada census their daughter , Mary Walsh ( my 2x great grandmother) was born in Newfoundland probably on the way to PEI.  Johanna Lannan Walsh died in 1842 in PEI.

There are many Lannan's / Lannon's who came to PEI from Ireland in the mid 1800's including Michael, Thomas, and Andrew who I believe were related to Johanna Lannan and DNA evidence indicates this is the case.  I realize that without the parish name iit is difficult to locate my Irish Lannan's but I thought someone out there might give me some direction based on the above information.

  • Without a more definite location, e.g. town or parish, any search for your Lannan family would be difficult, the second problem is the early date as few of the parish records go back to the very early 1800s (assuming your Lannan family were Roman Catholic ?).

At the time of Griffith's Primary Valuation which was carried out in the mid 1800s, so well after your Lannans left Co. Wexford, the surname was most common in neighbouring Co. Kilkenny, but was also present in counties Roscommon, Cork & Louth, followed by Co. Wexford at 5th on the list. The civil parishes in Co. Wexford where Lannan/Lannon/Lannin properties were present at the time of the survey (1853 for this area) were as follows :

    Kilgarvan
    Killinick
    Kilmokea
    Oldross
    Taghmon
    St James & Dunbrody
    St. Mary's, New Ross
    Templeludigan
    Tideway
    Tintern

Do you have an estimated year of birth for your Johanna Lannan/Lannon ?
A search of the Catholic records online did not show any likely marriage in Ireland between Catherine and Edward/Edmond, and a search for Lannan Catholic records in the parishes that do have records for the very early 1800s, shows a number of Lannan baptisms - the difficulty is proving (or ruling out) any connection to your Johanna..is there any chance of establishing the names of Johanna's parents - e.g. from PEI or Newfoundland records ?

  • Thanks for your guidance. I suspect Johanna lannan was born between 1800-1810 and her father's name might have been Michael. I believe one of her brothers was Michael Lannan, others being Thomas and Andrew??? There is no evidence of a marriage in Newfoundland so I suspect they married before leaving Ireland and had Mary Walsh enroute while in Newfoundland? Lots of speculation as I have no records to prove my hypothesis.

PEI records and census records indicate Michael Lannan b 1803 Ireland, George Lannan b 1809 Irelaand, and Andrew Lannan b 1815 Ireland. They are possible siblings of Johanna?

It looks like Michael Lannan b 1803 had at least 2 sons born in Ireland Thomas b 1843 and Andrew b 1844 and by the 1850's he was in PEI. If Michael was the brother of Johanna he would have been from Wexford.

I do realize how difficult this search is based on the early dates.

  • Have you located Michael & his sons on the Canadian census returns together as a family - do you know his wife's name ?

There's a much better chance of finding baptism records for his Irish born sons due to the more recent dates.  If details can be located it would at least give you a more precise location e.g. a parish, and that even if it ends up that the church records do not go back far enough to prove the connection between Johanna and Michael using baptisms & marriages, you have a proven link via your DNA evidence.

If any of the other Lannan's in the area at the time have Irish born children these could also be worth searching for in Irish baptism records - particularly any with distintive names..

  • I have found Michael Lannan in the PEI census' and am certain that Thomas  b1843 IRE and Andrew b 1844 Ire were his sons and worked his farm, From what I can tell his wife was Mary Breen?? and they had another son Michael who was born in PEI in 1858 but I have no information on him. I do not have access to Wexford County records.

  • Hi, I was born a Lannan, my mob came to Australia from Kilkenny, your Michael was I think my gggfather Patrick Lannan 's brother, haven't checked my site on Ancestry. Com for a while. I do know that we were originally from New Ross, and have Waterford connections. I will check further, there was a chap I chatted to who said he traced Lannan back to 1100s but wasn't happy to give much information.
