John,
Can you provide anymore information? Who was being baptized? When? Where? Do you know his parent's? When and where did he get married? To whom? Do you know when he died?

Hi Mary,
I’m trying to trace my great grandfather’s birth and everything in the record ties in with the little information I have about him. However the name could be either Maria or Maurice so I’m looking to see if anything in the record relates to the gender of the child. The record is from 27th October 1827 in Killarney and according to various census records this is where and when he was born. Also, he had a connection to a Patrick Tangney in that Patrick’s daughter is shown as Maurice’s niece in one census. There is also a birth record for Patrick with the same parents. Having said all that my gut feeling is that the name is indeed Maria which means I’ll be back to the drawing board!
Thanks for your help.
Ragards,
John

I looked up the Tangny name and there is a strong association with Killarney County Kerry but unless there is specific information it is difficult to match records. Who is your grandfather, name and place of birth, do you know who his parents are? You mention a Patrick Tangney, do you have the name of his daughter ? the dates you are researching. Also the birth record for a Patrick with the same parents but you do not say who the parents are? Do you know of any siblings to your grandfather? If you have information on any marriages , all of this information is needed . The more you can help, the better it will be to get you to your connections.

Hi Mary,
My grandfather was Maurice Tangny, born in Killarney circa 1827. If the record in question turns out to be for Maurice and not Maria then his parents were Robert Tangny & Margaret Garin. If not I am at a dead end. I think Patrick was his brother and he, like Maurice, moved to London and had a daughter Margaret with his wife/partner Margaret Brown. I cannot find any record of a marriage between them though. So at the moment I just need to establish whether or not the record is for a boy or a girl and take it from there.
Regards,
John

John,
RootsIreland (paid subscription) shows Mary born in 1827 in Killarney to a Robert Tangney and Margaret Gurin. On Irishgenealogy (free website) click on Church, there is a Maurice Tangney born to Daniel Tangney and Teresa Kelly in Killarney in 1837. Dates are not always accurate. Siblings- Mary 1835, Margaret 1841, Patrick 1845, Teresa 1848.
Maybe something to research??

John,
Unfortunately, the Maurice, son of Daniel and Teresa, is not yours. In the 1851 and 1861 English censuses, Daniel and Teresa were living in Surrey with their family. Their son Maurice eventually moved to Massachusetts.
The censuses I found for Maurice in London show his wife as Mary and Margaret in 1871 is identified as his niece and in 1881 and 1891 she is identified as daughter.
1861 census shows Mary was from Dingle, Ireland

Hi Mary,
Thanks for that. I had already discounted Daniel Tangney as the dates did not add up. My query really is whether the transcription of Mary in the 1927 birth record is correct or if it could be Maurice. As is the case with many of these records the handwriting is not particularly easy to read.
Thanks again,
John

Hello John,
In addition to the RootsIreland transcription kindly provided by Mary, two other genealogy website transcriptions give the name of the child baptized in Killarney in 1827 as either Mariam, or Mary.
For example, the Find My Past website transcribes the name of the child as “Mariam,” Latin for Maria or Mary.
The Church Records collection at the irishgennealogy.ie website transcribes the child’s first name as “Mary.”
You can access the baptism transcription from the Find My Past website at the following link after establishing a free account:
https://www.findmypast.com/transcript?id=IRE%2FPRS%2FBAP%2F7115934&tab=…The transcription from irishgenealogy.ie can be accessed at the following link. The transcription will download after you follow the prompts: https://tinyurl.com/msz7pdch
With baptism transcriptions from three different websites, RootsIreland, Find My Past, and irishgenealogy.ie, I think you can finally discount this 1827 Killarney baptism, as the baptism for your great grandfather Maurice.
Best of Luck with your research John.
