I will be visiting Doneraile on Wednesday 13 June 2018 to see the area where my ancestor Mary (Maria) Leary (1836-1925) lived with her father William Leary c.1810-c.1847).  I discoved Mary's baptism (in Rossagh) thanks to one of  your wonderful Kildorrery volunteers and I am hoping that someone might know if Mary's father William Leary was related to John Leary (1764-1839) who was one of the Doneraile Conspirators in 1829 and who was sentenced to death which was commuted to life in the colony of New South Wales?

I am looking forward to visiting your area very much and any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks.

  • Hi GGS,

The best way to find out if someone is related is to create a family tree and do some research.

Both Myheritage and Ancestry give the option to build a free tree, records might be found on the subscription site www.rootsireland.ie

Unfortunately records from before 1800 are rare in general

  • Thanks Anne Marie. I agree that the 1800 records are indeed rare having already exhausted all your suggestions with only limited success. I live in hope though and will keep searching. Perhaps I will meet someone when I visit Doneraile who may be able to help.
Regards and thanks for your assistance.
