LEHAN in Cork Ireland

I am visiting Cork in September and wish to connect with anyone who has knowledge of the following LEHAN family.

My great-great grandfather was Michael LEHAN born about 1825.  He received his Merchant Seaman's certificate 3733 ticket 17 238, 1853-57 in Cork, Ireland.

His marriage registration in London England in 1860 to Jane Leaney stated that his father’s name was Patrick. His children were as follows, all born in England:

                Ellen Elizabeth born 1862

Patrick Henry born October 15 1863

Columbus Colman born May 17 1868

Julia Agnes born May 27 1871

I am descended from Columbus Colman.

Having searched church records through irishgenealogy.ie I found the following as a possible family for Michael in Midleton and the South Parish of Cork and Ballinhassig.

Parents: Patrick LEHAN and Ellen FOLEY married February 8 1817 in Midleton

Children: Coleman LEHANE baptised March 5 1820

Mrgt LEHAN baptised March 4 1821

Ellen LEHAN baptised August 18 1823

Michael LEHANE baptised October 15 1825 in Ballinhassig

It is because the names that Michael gave to three of his children are the same as those of these parents and brother that I suspect that this is likely his birth family.  If anyone has this family in their research or knows anything to help me I would be grateful to hear from them.  I do plan to visit the Cork City and County Archives.  I have found a Griffith’s Valuation Record for Coleman LEHAN, South Main Street, 1852.  Any suggestions for research to confirm that this is Michael’s family would be gratefully received.

Thank you.

  • Hi Steph, have you searched for the name Lehane?  The Lehane name is also found in Carrigtwohill county Cork.

  • Thank you for your reply.  I did get some results with the name Lehane and it appears that the family I outlined in my email had the name spelled both ways. But I will search again specifically adding the  e.  I see that Carricktwohill is close to Midleton where Patrick and Ellen's marriage took place. And having read about the naming traditions recently on Ireland Reaching Out, I note that a witness to the wedding was Michael Foly, possibly Ellen's father, so my Micahel might be named after him.

Thank you for the suggestion. I will follow up on it.

    regards,

    Stephanie

  • Hi Stephanie,

Jane emailed me about your conundrum. Have you tried to contact Shane Lehane, lecturer in folklore/genealogist in Colaiste Stiofan Naofa in Cork? He would be a great link.

I'm rarely on these boards so please feel free to email me:
