I would like to know please, if there is any knowledge and history of an old RC Church, or a cemetery or graveyard in the townland of Leitrim, Killokennedy, County Clare? or perhaps an adjacent one.
I am aware of the church and cemetery in Kilbane but note that that is quite some distance from Leitrim , Blackhill, Springmount etc. As a result I wondered if there was, in early days, Chruch and burial ground closer in or around Leitrim. The church in Kilbane would have been a very long journey on foot in the 1820s to 1850s particularly in inclement weather.
I look forward to hearing any suggestions or recollections on this.
Thank you!

In the 1830s there were three chapels in the Catholic Parish of 'Broadford and Doonass' or 'Broadford, Kilseily, Killokennedy', one in Kilbane village, a second at Kilmore townland, both of these in Killokennedy civil parish, and a third at Broadford townland in Kilseily civil parish. See District of Broadford or Broadford and Doonass Parts of the civil parish of Killokennedy were also covered by the Catholic parish of Doonass & Trugh, which had two chapels. I would think the chapel at Kilmore townland (placename database - logainm.ie) looks to be the one closest to Leitrim townland.
edited : The entry for Killokennedy (civil) parish in Lewis' Topographic Dictionary of 1837 mentions two of these chapels - see Killokennedy Parish, Tulla Barony, Co. Clare

Hi Barred_Bandicott:
The Kilmore church and graveyard are located south of Broadford and very close to Killokennedy as Shane has noted. It is just off the R465 road from Broadford to Limerick. I'm not sure if those headstones have been transcribed. I can get a photo for you of the church if you wish. Let me know.
For Kilbane graveyard which is located in Killokennedy Civil parish, the inscriptions are available at the link below:

The church in Kilbane is still in existence. It was renovated not too long ago.
As to Leitrim's location, on the OSI maps, it would appear to be closer to Bridgetown than to Broadford. That is not to say that people from Broadford would not have worshipped there. A priest once told me that often families worshipped in the church that was not always closest, but was an easier walk to get to. (In the 1900s, that meant an easier cycle).
Let me know if you need further help. There is a great local historian in Broadford who I can ask.
All the best,
Jane.

THANK YOU Shane and Jane!
I'm sorry I missed your replies back in February - where has the year gone!
I will look at the information you have provided and get back to you. I am seeking the burial location of John and Bridget Hogan who lived at Blackhill/Ballyquinbeg area possibly Springmount in the late 1800s but I have been unable to locate their dates of death and place of burial. There is a memorial to their son Michael, his wife Mary and their children in the Kilbane cemetery but nothing further. Perhaps they are in unmarked graves there. Would there have been a church and burial ground at the Glenomera house by any chance?
Thanks again,

Dear Barred_Bandicoot:
I will ask a local historian in that area who may be able to answer that question.
In the meantime, some of those graveyards transcriptions are on the Clare Library website. You might take a look at them in your own time:

Once I hear with a reply, I will post it on this thread.
Kind regards,
Jane.
