I am the great grandson of one John Lennon, born about 1836 in Mount Talbot or Cloonakilleg. He was the son, we believe, of a William Lennon and Mary Collins. He had two sisters, Brigid (who married a Mitchell and immigrated to Indiana and died about 1908), and Catherine (who married a Tierney and died in 1880). William died shortly after John's birth, and Mary remarried a man known as Joseph Killian and immigrated to the US shortly thereafter. From his self-report in the US Census, John said he immigrated from Ireland in 1869 to Boston. I have checked the Griffith's Valuation for Tisrara parish and it just teased me. An Institute's report of local "estates" merely teased me even further. We understand from Father Bierne (and the book of the history of the parish) that the Parish Church burned down in the early 1850's which may be part of this problem. What I can say is that family lore has John Lennon arriving in the US with money (said lore says 5,000 gold pieces, but I rather doubt that), but he knew how to read and write, he opened a successful grocery in Boston prior to his marriage to Euphemia Sweeney in 1876, so there may be some truth to the matter. Anyway, we're looking for any information concerning this John Lennon, (ca. 1836-1926), his parents and family, and any other information we can find about this family in Ireland. If you have any questions, or information, I can be reached at danlennon3@bresnan.net. Thanks!--Dan Lennon

  • Make John's birthyear circa 1846, NOT 1836...

  • The marriage file from 10/1876 of John Lennon and Euphemia Sweeney suggests that William Lennon is the father of John Lennon. We have a discrepancy of some sort with Mary as his mother. In the file she can be either Mary Collins or Mary Killian--John Lennon's death certificate from 1926 indicates Killian, other sources suggest Collins. We don't have good confirmation one way or the other. Thanks, Dan Lennon
