Leo or Keough or Kough name from Kilconnell
25 July, 2013 - 01:39  |  Adrian leo

My great grandmother Brigid Keogh was born in  1856 at possibly Ballinasloe. Verbal history (because she was unable to write) says that she lived around Ballinasloe and Loughrea. Her marriage was passed on in a handwritten note as follows.A Copy of A Handwritten Marriage Certificate is as follows:
Certificate of Marriage.
County Galway.Diocese of Clonfert.Parish of Killincoll. MARTIN LEO m BRIGID KEOGH 5th May 1869.Witnesses Wm. Bernard Teresa Burke
Signed:John P Callanan.Parish Priest.
Celebrant not recorded but "Father William Melvin" pencilled in.
Given at Killinoll - 3 November 1919.As Killincoll is in this general area it seems that the marriage took place at Kilconnell despite the different spelling as in the handwritten record. Is there a Catholic Church at Kilconnell? Is the name Keogh known in this area? What about the names of the priests>was Father Melvin at Kilconnell in 1869.Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Adrian Leo

  • Hi Adrian,

I checked rootsireland for Bridget Keoghs born 1856 = - 4 and got 1 match (attached).

The parish is St Nicholas RC as you can see but I'm not sure how that fits with Ballinasloe.

Perhaps the Galway experts can advise.
