I am looking for the above man and possibly his wife. His son John was born in 1824 and several generations lived at 12 Francis Street Dundalk. John married Nannie Usher in Dublin in 1858 and Hugh was listed as his father, they had 8 children and lived in Francis Street. The only Hugh I can find in the area is listed as renting a yard and office. The family were Church of Ireland. Any help would be great fully received as I seem to have hit a brick wall!!

Hi Jackied I see on the ist January 1828 a Hugh McCleery married a Jane Henderson in County Armagh, no other information on the subscription site I looked at, Armagh, North Louth and Down border each other. I also see a Hugh McCleary born in Blaris, Antrim in 1808, father James, and another birth in Monaghan in 1797, both places are not too far away but still not too close either for the times.
In this site for County Louth there is a Hugh McCleary (note spelling) on an 1837 list of house holders valued over £5, he is in Chapel Lane, cannot see it on Google maps but assume it is off Chapel Street, it does not adjoin Francis Street, also a McCleary who returned from WW1. http://www.jbhall.freeservers.com/
I did not see a suitable death post 1864 to 1900,
I can only find one birth in Down of a Charlotte McCleery in 1843, I see a lot in Dublin but not with a father Hugh. Here is the Church of Ireland site where you can view available records https://www.ireland.anglican.org/about/rcb-library/catalogues/represent… Substantial C of I records were lost in the 1922 explosion/fire.
Did you find 8 children of Hugh or 8 grandchildren. Also McCleery is also McCleary depending on who is writing I think at that time, other similiar names here are Cleary and Clery.

I think the Hugh mentioned in Chapel Street may be the man I’m looking for. I’m not sure where John was born but thought as he was in Dundalk for some time he may have come from the area. I have researched Hugh’s from other parts of the country but can’t find anything to link them.

Hello Jackied, I was looking for Hughs death, had no luck but got a birth in Dundalk of a Hugh McClark, this took my interest as I had never heard of a McClarke name but am aware that the name Clery and Clarke are interchanged here in Ireland, the Gaelic selling of Clarke can be Clery, this interchage in recognised in McLysaghts surnames of Ireland. So I looked at the 9th March 1798 in the Dundalk register, and it actually may be McClery too in my reading but will leave it to you to decide, father James I think and I would read the mothers name as Muckian (a name in the area) those standing can be read too, however I am unable to read the address, looks like Bxxxxx or could be B'xxxxx indicating the name is shortened. the link is here and it is the 2nd baptism on the 9th March. https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0216 However this is an RC baptism, possible they changed religion later as it happened both ways but a long shot but worth noting.
You can see Irish townlands here https://www.townlands.ie/louth/dundalk/
The nearest birth for a John McCleary in your time frame is in Meath and I can find no death record for Hugh either, it is possible these do not exist as records at this period are only church records and may be lost or were never kept.

Thank you Pat for all your help. I am beginning increasingly to think that perhaps Hugh Mccleery didn’t come from theDundalk area. I now know that John Mccleery and his wife Nannie Usher were the first Mccleerys th live in Francis Street . As John was married in Dublin and worked for some time in Belfast and also had a brother Robert who lived and worked there I’m wondering if he was born in that area too. I visited John’s grave in Dundalk hoping to glean some information but unfortunately there was no headstone. His obituary said he was from Dundalk and Newry although he died at his sons house in Belfast.. All very confusing! I think my only hope is if I could find a birth certificate or baptism record for him

Hi Jackied
I searched Irish Genealogy under church records 1780 to 1820 for Dublin and only got one McCleary hit, an Eliz McCleary death in 1801, the site is down currently for suspicious activity it says, it is a holiday weekend here so it will not be back until Tuesday at the earliest.
It struck me if Hugh was mabe baptised by another name, say James Hugh and used Hugh his second name to distinguish him from other family, again only a thought. Other things to consider assuming the family had some money is the Registry of Deeds https://irishdeedsindex.net/index.php it is not complete but is being put online by volunteers, there are 3 McCleery hits and 2 McCleary hits in the 1700s.
Also if there is a family will anywhere we may strike gold. Lots of wills were destroyed in 1922 but some abstracts remain. For some reason I am locked out of my subscription site and will have to wait till Tuesday to sort it out, saw a Hugh McCleary turn up in circa 1870 in a court case, probably a witness but will revert if of interest.
The National Library site publish a list of professional genealogists if you would consider hiring one.
