Hi,

I am wondering if someone would be able to help me please?

My 2 x gt grandpa's son married a Fanny Ryan 5/12 1899 in Victoria,Autralia. Her father & mother were Charles Ryan (family from Limerick) and Anastasia Cormick from Kilkenny.

Anastasia's records in Victoria, OZ states her parents were Michael Cormick (a farmer) and Catherine Kenny. I found Michael and Catherine's marriage in Muckalee 10 Feb 1812, witnesses Philip Tobin and Margaret Brennan. I figured this would probably make his birth about 1790. They were Catholic. I have no idea who Michael or Catherine's parents were. Cormick is spelt in a variety of ways across the records later on.

Michael and Catherine had 6 children that I've found so far:-

Martin 1815

Baby 1817 - I can't read the name (attached)

Arthur 1819

Ellen 1822

James 1824

Mary 1827

All children were baptized in St John's City of Kilkenny but I can't find Anastasia's baptism anywhere. I've tried all surrounding churches and parishes without any luck so far.

Anastasia immigrated to Australia as a domestic servant onboard the Fitzjames which left London 16/9/1855 - Southampton 3/10/1855 and arrived in Adelaide 31 Dec 1855. Her age is stated as 19 yrs, a spinster, and according to family she paid 2pounds towards the passage. Age stated as 19 yrs so birth about 1836.

She married Charles Ryan 2 Sep 1857 in Bourke, Victoria - his parents John Ryan and Susannah McGrath from City of Limerick, Ireland. The marriage record says her age is 20 yrs. This would make birth yr 1837.

On Anastasia's 1926 DC record it says she was 98 yrs on death which would make birth yr 1828.

I've attached the 1) Her parents' marriage record, 2) immigration papers, 3) her marriage record, 4) her death record. 5) I've also attached the un-named baby baptism and was wondering if someone might be able to work out the christian name.

I've added 2 photos - one of Anastasia and 1 of her and husband and children - Anastasia seated, her husband Charles Ryan standing next to her with a white beard..

Hopefully there may be someone in Ireland who might see silialrities to their own Cormick (etc) or Ryan families.

Thanking you so much for looking at this for me.

I searched on the subscription site Roots Ireland and they transcribed the 1817 name as Ellen. I thought it might be Eliza. In any event, it appears to be an "E" name.

Roots Ireland also has baptismal records for Catherine baptized September 28 1830 and Edmund baptized June 3 1833.

I went searching on Roots Ireland for Anastasia and found a good lead. There was a January 11 1836 baptism for an Anastasia Cormack with father Michael Cormack and mother Catherine Kelly. The baptism was in the same parish St. John's Kilkenny. They lived in Dunmore.

I do not have access to the parish register records for 1836. As you can see from this link https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0991  there is a gap in baptismal records on the NLI site from July 1830-February 1842  The parish must have found the missing records at some later point and provided them to Roots Ireland. My speculation is that the surname of Kenny was mistranscribed as Kelly. The 1836 record is consistent with the emigration year of 1855.

  • Hi Roger,

Thank you ever so much. I was beginning to think I'd never find out anything about Michael and Catherine and the family as no one in Oz belonging to our Wilson family had any information other than what I had uploaded.

    You've made my day,lol

    Warmest regards,
