    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Queenstown RC records go back to 1812 but when I checked the subscription site Roots Ireland, there were no Edward Chapman baptismal records around 1843.

What was Edward's religion? I ask because there is an 1843 Church of Ireland baptismal record in Ballingarry Co. Limerick.

  • Thank you Roger

Unfortunateley I have not much informations about my Great GrandFather

The only information i have is from the register of Marriage , Birth & death of New South Wales in Australia , so i can not say what was his religion

Before marrying Christina Matilda Graham he had already been married and had several children

I will try to get more informations from the register in Australia

    Best regards

  • Hi Bronwen ,

Sorry for my late reply .

Edward Meaney Chapman was my greatgranfather  ,  born in queenstown Ireland & he was married with Christina Matilda Graham in Australia

they had two children Archibald Graham Chapman & Laura Graham Chapman both born in Australia  but the register in Australia shows that he was previously married & had also other children from this previous marriage .

Archibald Graham Chapman , my grandfather , married Agnes Cecilia O'Reilly in Australia & they had two children , Archibald Joseph Chapman my Father & Barbara Chapman my Aunt .

So i am the son of Archibald Joseph Chapman .

But i have no knowledge of your grandmother Ruby Graham Chapman .

    Kind regards

Edward Philip Chapman ( Philip is my usual first name )

  • Hi Phillip

I have only just seen your message posted in September 2019.  Writing this to you, hoping you still receive messages from this site.

Edward Meaney Chapman was my great grandfather.  I am a granddaughter of Edward & Christiana Chapman, my grandmother, their daughter, is Ruby Graham  Chapman

I expect you have now updated your information and would have found that Edward Meaney Chapman only married once and he had 8 children.

On 21 March, 1874 at St Peter’s Church, Campbelltown, Edward Meaney Chapman married Christiana Matilda Graham.

Children:  Edward and Christiana CHAPMAN had 8 children, Ruby was the 6th child

    1. Constance Mary Chapman            1875 -1920
    2. Millie Graham Chapman                1876 -1876
    3. William James Chapman               1877 -1959
    4. Laura Graham Chapman               1880 -1882
    5. Michael Graham Chapman            1882 -1961
    6. Ruby Graham Chapman              1883-1979   -  my grandmother
    7. Archibald Graham Chapman         1885 -1962
    8. Harold Graham Chapman             1887 -1960

I have  been researching the Chapman family that immigrated to Sydney mid 1800's.  I have completed all the families, however, I have not been able to find out much information on Archibald Graham Chapman's family.  I would like to add his children's names and date of birth to my family tree.

My research:  Archibald Graham Chapman married Agnes Cecilia O'Reilly (b. 1882 d.1949), they had 3 children.  Two sons, one daughter - Archibald Joseph b. 13.10.1917, Edward Thomas b. 22.2.1919 and Alvinia Teressa (also known as Alma or Barbara?) date of birth unknown.

Archibald and Agnes separated when the children were young and after many court appearances they eventually divorced in 1940.  Discovered that Agnes was a Catholic and Archibald a Protestant, so I think in those days that would have created a problem.  Archibald would have been required to change his religion, which presumably he did, as I found a newspaper article about their very lavish wedding at St Marys Cathedral, Sydney, on 28 February, 1912.

You stated you are the son of Archibald Joseph, so I do not understand that you did not mention your Uncle Edward.   You did mention your Aunt as Barbara, so I presume that is the daughter.  I came to a dead end with the daughter, thinking that she married and then went under her married name.  From Electoral Rolls I found that Alvinia Terresa Chapman lived at Randwick in 1943, and then at Macleay Street, Darlinghurst in 1949, so don't know if this is the correct person.

As Kingswood Archives is not far from where I live, I actually went there and obtained a copy of Archibald and Agnes' Divorce Papers, hoping the names of the children were on the paperwork.  The children's names recorded on the paperwork are Archibald Joseph, Edward Thomas and Alma Theresa, it did not include their birth dates.

If you have not been able to complete your research, I am very happy to assist you.

I would be appreciate if you are willing to correct or add to my research on Archibald's children.  It has been very interesting doing the family research. I had no idea of all the achievements the Chapman Family accomplished.
