Hi, I just joined and I'm looking for more information on John Menton, born in 1806 in Banagher. Married an Annie Cannon and had 7 children that we know of (William F., Maria Mary, Ellen, Patrick, Annie, Katherine and Michael). Annie Menton would be my great-grandmother, born Aug. 15, 1854 and I would really like to find out where. Also would like to find out what year this family this family emigrated to Canada. Any help or info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

  •  Hello Fran,

what information are you looking for on your great-grandmother exactly? Sorry I can't quite understand that from your message.

Regarding the emigration, have you already searched here: http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/022/022-908.003-e.html. Records were often better at the destination than in Ireland.

We have just read the headstones in the old St. Reynagh's Graveyard in Banagher -- I will see if a Menton is among them.

    Kind regards,

  • Thanks so much for the reply Dolores. I would like to find out where exactly my great-grandmother Annie Menton, was born and where she lived before emigrating. I am checking that link you gave for emigration but it is stated "There are no comprehensive nominal lists of immigrants arriving in Canada before 1865. Few such lists have survived." Although there are some partial lists I can check, thanks.

    Warm Regards,

  • If you mean the Annie Menton who married Luke Gibbons then I am Annie's great grand niece. John Menton being my great great Grandfather. Her brother William is my great grandfather. I have his baptism certificate as follows:

William Menton was Baptized October 28, 1844 Parish of Gallon &
Reynagh Diocese of Ardagh & Clanm.. Church of St. Rynagh, Banagher
by Rev. James O'Flynn.  Parents: John Menton & Anne Cannan.  Sponsors
Thomas Cannan (brother of Anne?) & Mary Kirwan.
    Note attached reads:
    1844 October 28th. Gulillmum F.
Joannes Menton & Annae Cannan. SS Thoma Cannan & Maria Kirwan.
I hereby declare the above to be a true and accurate extract taken
from the Registry of Baptism Kept here.  Signed James Manning P.P.
Claphan Kings Co. 4th Sept. 1921
Certificate of Baptism issued Sept. 4, 1921 and attached note from Rev
    James Manning.

    Hope this might help.
