Hello--First time writing, so if this is not the place to seek information--please guide me to the right place.  I am relatively new to genealogy searching!

I am looking for my ancestor Mathew Lingrell.  I find him in the 1800 US Federal Census in Dorchester County Maryland and have not been able to trace him any further.  Although I have confirmed nothing, it appears as if he was born in Kildare, Ireland in 1760 and died in Union County Ohio in 1810.  The 1800 Census says he owned one slave.  He married Jane/Jenna Wick in 1790, who further married Isaac Titsworth in 1806.

I am not sure, but believe that the name Lingrell is probably Americanized or misspelled--with many different derivations.  Some of them show up in the same census--maybe with brothers?

1800 Federal Census for Dorchester County

Langrall        James                31--27

Langrell        James                33--10

Lengrell        Nehemiah             07--20

Lingrell        Major                06--32

Lingrell        Mathew               30--24

Lingrell        William              30--25

I am sure there are others.

Any help you could provide would be very much appreciated as this is the first relative with my same last name that I can find to appear in the US.

  • Scot:

I did not find any Lingrell records but Langrell/Langrill was a surname that was found in Co. Wicklow which is the county to the east of Co. Kildare. The subscription site Roots Ireland even has a few Church of Ireland baptismal records in Co. Wicklow back to 1760 and 1762 but no Mathew. The Griffiths Valuation around 1850 also has five Langrell households in Co. Wicklow.
