Hi

My Great Great Grandfather John Mulvihill (sometimes spelt Mulvehill, Mulverhill or Mulvahill) I THINK was on Montague Chapman estate at Killua in Ireland and emigrated to Australia on the Trafalgar arriving in Adelaide South Australia in 1847 and went to live/work on Montague Chapman estate at Dry Creek/Parafield, Adelaide South Australia.

I THINK John was born in 1811/1812 and I also believe he travelled to Australia with his wife and 3 children,

There is some indication that John may have been born in Galway

I am fairly sure John's wife was Mary nee Cleary born about 21 February 1814.in Knockany and Patrickswell Parish in the Cashel and Emly Diocese in the County of Limerick.

While I can track their descendants from their arrival in Adeliade Australia I am having no luck in finding

1. John's Birth Certificate/Baptism details and original place of his residence.

2. Their marriage date

3. Their parents names

Any help would be appreciated.

I was not able to find a marriage record on the subscription site Roots Ireland.

I did find two possible baptismal records for children unless these records were for a different couple.

Michael Mulvihill baptized November 1 1840 Woodford RC parish Co. Galway father John Mulvihill and mother Maria Cleary. sponsors John Mulvihill and Ann Cleary

Ann Mulvihill baptized January 5 1843 RC parish Woodford Co. Galway father John Mulvihill mother Maria Cleary sponsors Michael Monogue and Catherine Tuohy.

Are these records for your ancestors?

  • Hi

I think they both are as the do tie in with childrens names for John and Maria who I thought was Mary.

At least they were living in Galway at time these children were baptised and i THINK John may have been born n Galway so maybe they were married there ??

Thank you.. As you know every little bit helps.

  • Hi Roger

I have a child of John Mulvihill and Mary (Maria) Cleary Michael Joseph BORN 1/11/1840 so that is probably his baptismal date and not his birth date and

a child Anne Agnes (Annie)  BORN 5/1/1843  so I am sure you have the correct records

I have a Death notice here in Adelaide South Australia for Mary Cleary which would make me think (dates etc) this is the same person who was mother to the above.

Between Michael and Ann was another child Catherine born in 1842.

The younger brother of these children John Joseph BORN Circa 1848 is my direct Great Grand Father..

I wonder if the sponsors of Michael (the first born to John and Mary (Maria) John Mulvihill and Ann Cleary were John's father who I believe was named John and born in Circa 1788 and Mary (Maria's) mother ?????. A had an idea Maria (Mary) Cleary parents were Pat Cleary (Father) and Mary nee McCarthy.

Here is a link to the Woodford RC parish register  https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0340  You may want to scan the register to see if you can find Catherine in 1842. Looks like marriage records are missing from October 1833 to March 1851 which would include the period when John and Maria likely married.

Possibly John Mulvihill was the grandfather of Michael. Ann Cleary could have been a sister to Maria.
