I'm looking for ancestors of Catharine Killeen, known as Kate. She was born around 1840-48 in County Roscommon.

Her father was James Killeen and he died before April 1866, when she married Thomas Melia in Irlam, near Manchester.

She named her first two daughters Bridget and Mary and her only son after his paternal grandfather.

I'm now stuck and any thoughts or ideas would be very much appreciated.

thank you!
Helen

I searched on the subscription site Roots Ireland and did not see a Catherine Killeen baptismal record with father James in the 1840s in Co. Roscommon. Likely the parish where she was baptized no longer has records back to the 1840s. The 1855 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing had ten James Killeen records. Seven were in Drum civil parish in South Roscommon, two in Killinvoy parish and one in Kilteevan parish. However, we don't know if your James was included in the Griffiths.

    Have you considered DNA testing?

    Hi Roger,

thank you for the reply. I couldn't find anything on Roots Ireland either. One possibility cropped up on family search, though, screenshot attached. It's the right timeline and Jacobi will be Latinised version of James(?). A mother called Catherine Bridget or Mary would work, with the daughters' names.

Kate made a point of always including Co. Roscommon as her place of birth on UK census forms.

    I'll keep looking

    Kind regards

I went back to Roots Ireland and did the search for 1839 without a father's name and the 1839 record came up as indicated on the record you attached. I looked at the parish register and it shows Jacobi but the Roots Ireland transcribed showed Jacob so when I searched using James, I got a "no record". The parish is Roscommon and Kilteevan. There were four siblings shown on Roots Ireland-- Gregary 1830 Margaret 1833 Mary Ann 1837 Brigid 1842 Parents were married May 1 1825 at Roscommon church witnesses Patrick Farrell Hugh Farrell

  • By way of an update, I've now found the parish record in Lancashire for Kate's marriage in 1866.
Her mother's name was given as Bridget, but no maiden name.
Thus James / Jacob Killeen and Catherine Farrell aren't the right parents for our Kate.
