I am looking to find members of the Mchugh and Connolly families. My great-grandmother was Delia (Bridget?) McHugh born in 1872 to John McHugh and possibly Bridget (also Delia) Deacy. They had other children named Patrick and Sarah (and possibly Mary K. ad Elizabeth Sheerin?). I believe they lived in Lurigan in the Parish of Caltra but I have also come across the place name of Tuan. Their daughters, Sarah and Delia emigrated to the United States. I think that Delia arrived at Ellis Island in October of 1896 already married to John Connolly. They had 5 children while living in New York:  Mary J. (Mae) born Sept. 23, 1903, Sarah A. (Sallie) born Jan 27, 1904, Kathleen c. born Mar 17, 1905, James P. born in 1907, and John born Aug 1, 1909. My grandmother was Kathleen and she married Frederick C. Wright.

I am trying to extend my family tree back further. If anyone has any information about any other familt members, please message me.

  • Dear McHugh/Connolly Descendent:

Many thanks for your post to the Ireland Reaching Out message board and welcome to the site!

We have several volunteers in that area who may be able to assist you with your query and I'm copying them with this post.  Please be sure to give them up to 2 weeks to reply.

In the meantime, you might consider creating an Ancestor profile for the McHughs and Connollys.  You can do so by clicking on the "XO Chronicles" tab at the top of the page.  If you have any difficulties or questions, please contact me at:  jhalloranryan@irelandxo.com.

Thanks for your interest in Ireland Reaching Out.

    Kind regards,

    Jane.

  • Dear McHugh/Connolly Descendent,

My name is Clare Horgan I am a volunteer for the Claregalway area in Co. Galway. I found out a Bridget, Patrick and a Sarah with parents John McHugh and Bridget Murphy in a place called  Ballybane in the District of Tuam. No Mary or Elizabeth. I can not find the townland of Ballybane, but I did find a Ballybaun near Caltra. Can't find anything with a Lurigan or I thought it might be Largan but any townland with this name is not close. See the link below to townlands.ie, which is very helpful to find out information on all townlands in Ireland.

If you wish to contact me for help and guidance, I would be only delighted to help.

    My email is claregalway@irelandxo.com

Looking forward to hearing from you,

    Clare

    Thanks for reaching back!

After further research, I believe all of my ancestors hail from County Mayo, as I was always told. I am attaching a photo taken back in 1990 of the McHugh family homestead. It is still owned by descendents of the McHugh family. If anyone recognizes this building, it may offer some clues for me. Thanks, again! Nancy Moore
