William John Fleming, my 2xggf, Father John ~1810-1878, mother Mary Clark ~1810-1864. He married Sophia/ Susannah Jane Houston Smith(previously married to Henry Shelford), daughter of Robert William Smith and Sophia / Susan Houston, both deceased by 1867, and they moved to Scotland, where they had 8 children. 1 daughter, Easter/ Esther was born in Ireland before they left. William was in the army. He died in Aberdeen in 1896. His father remarried to Sophia Jane Foley at St John's Church of Ireland, Belfast on July 12 1864. I would love to find out more about his and his wife's ancestors, siblings etc. Thank you.

  • You say that William married Sophia and they then moved to Scotland. I don’t see a marriage in Ireland but I do see one in Old Machar, Aberdeen on 25.3.1867, so it looks as though they married there, not in Ireland. So if they had a daughter Esther/Easter in Ireland it was perhaps before they married? I checked under Shelford and Fleming but did not find a birth that fits.

    If you think William was born in Bangor, and you know his denomination, you could check the baptism records in PRONI in Belfast. The records are not on-line and a personal visit is required to view them.

    I can see that John’s father was a labourer, as was his father. Labourers moved around a lot to follow the available work and can be challenging to trace.

  • Thank you for your input. I am trying to reconcile a discrepancy I have regarding the husband of Mary Milne, and therefor the father of Charlotte. In the marriage record Mary marries William John Fleming in 1891 in Dundee. Both are 18. In censuses, his place of birth is England. The death record for 1915, indicates the deceased is Robert William Fleming with the correct parents and spouse, but born in Aberdeen. Does anyone know why he would change his name? I have 3 siblings for Charlotte. Does anyone have them too? Sophia Jane Smith Fleming 1892-1892; William 1898-1974 marries Margaret McIntyre Steinson; Alexander 1900-1981.
