Hi there,

I first wanted to introduce myself. My name is Glenn Scollins, I'm 31 years old, and have lived in Boston all my life. My family and I traveled to Ireland last November and we instantly fell in love with everything about the country. We are planning another trip to return this year, but we were hoping to get some into on our actual descendants and visit the parishes they hailed from.

I've done a bit of digging and found that our irish roots on my father's side go back to Cork (and possibly Loughmoe/Tipperary). I was hoping someone may have some more information around the Scollins name. I have attached a family tree of what I have so far. It looks like my great great grandfather Hugh Scollins born in 1865 was born in Ireland. Also my great great grandmother Nora F Keeffe (1847-1942) has lineage that goes back to Patrick O'Keefe born in 1817.

I was interested if anyone had additional information on these families (Especially Scollins and Keeffe/KeefeO'Keefe) or knew if there were still any decendants living in the area. I'm doing this as a surprise christmas gift for my family but any information that could be provided would be a huge help.

Sorry for the novel, but regardless of whether or not you can help, I look forward to starting a dialogue. Visiting Ireland was a life changing experience for me and I look forward to learning more about where I came from and how I got where I am today, thank you!

  • Hi Glenn,
Loughmore West, Tipperary............ have you a document that states this name?
If you have can you load it up for us please.
I searched through the records of Loughnore West with SCO* and only found the name Scott. This was in the Tithe records.
Griffiths Valuation only show Scollins or Scollin in County Fermanagh and County Donegal.
Searcged again in Cork, only lists Scollard and Scott.
Have you got Hugh and Nora's marriage record?

There are still many places to look.

  • Hi Margot,

Thank you for the quick response. I saw Tippery because according to familysearch, Honora Ryan was born and baptized in "Loughmore and Castleiny, Tipperary, Ireland" in 1814. That's not on the "Scollins" or "Scollin" side, but rather the Keeffe/Keefe/O'Keefe side.

It's interesting that you found "Scollin" since we were told as children that we may have either been Colllins or Scollin and added an S either before Collins or after Scollin to get the current Scollins.

I unfortunately don't have any marraige records, only years of birth. Admittedly, I have much more information and records on my mothers family's side. I was curious as to what existed around the "Scollins" name since my father did not really know anything about his ancestry. I was only able to find the minimal family tree by searching my grandfather and great grandfather's name. All I really know is that there was a Hugh Scollins that stated he was born in Ireland in 1865 on a Boston Census Document in 1910 and he was married to Ellen Slattery/Slasherty (seen it spelled both ways).

Once again thank you so much for your help! I knew this was a shot in the dark so no worries if nothing else pops up :)

    Glenn
