Barbara and Andrew Byrne were my great-grandmother's parents. Andrew, a distiller, was born c1854 and died suddenly in Dublin in 1900. Barbara was born c1865 in County Wexford. The couple lived in Dublin and had a number of children including Mary Josephine Byrne (my great-grandmother), William J Byrne, Ellen Byrne and Johanna Byrne. After Andrew's death, the family lived at addresses in John Dillon Street and Vernon Street. Mary moved to Manchester where she died in 1929, aged 36, leaving her 3 children (including my grandfather) to be raised in an orphanage. I would like to know more about Barbara, Andrew and the other family members.

  • Do you know Barbara's surname, or have years of births for the children ?

Byrne was a very common surname, so the more details the better....

Barbara was not a common first-name at that time - I would think in this case it may have been a nickname

    Added - for reference :

Death of Andrew Byrne, March 2nd 1900, foreman in distillery reported age 46

Barbara Byne widow with son & three daughters in 1901
family is Catholic, Barbara born Co. Wexford, all the children bown 'Dublin City'

Barbara and three of the chilren at the same street in 1911
ages of the children a little off compared to 1901
crossed out but she reported - 8 children born to her, with 6 still living

  • I think I've located a lead on your Byrne family - found a good match for the youngest child shown on the 1901 census  Christina age 1, the details in the register (the page is quite faded) show she was born on the 21st December 1899, to Andrew Byrne labourer and Barbara Boland, the place of birth and residence appears to be 16 John Street - could this be a reference to the same John Dillon Street where the family lived at the time of the census returns ? (there was also a St. John Street in Dublin city)

I also located a marriage for Andrew and Barbara at St. Nicholas RC (Francis St.) on the 24th November 1882, Andrew is shown as a labourer, Barbara as a dress-maker, both full age, the groom's residence is 98 Francis Street, and the bride's 1 McClean's[?] Lane - their fathers are recorded as Patrick Byrne labourer and Andrew Boland farmer.

  • Thank you, that is amazing! I found a number of newspaper reports from March 1900, about the death of Andrew Byrne which give his address as 16 John Street, so the birth record for Christina fits with that. And this birth record shows Barbara's maiden name as Boland which is fantastic new information. As is the marriage record with Andrew and Barbara's occupations! Now I will have a little think about how to use this new info to find out more about the family.
