My name is Mary Connolly and my grandmother was also Mary Connolly. She grew up in Sonnagh, Kilchreest.Co.Galway. Her fathers name was Martin Connolly and her mothers name was Bridget McTigue who I think came from the parish of Ardrahan, Co.Galway. My grandmother had 8 brothers of which there were 2 sets of twins born 1st, their names were Patrick and John Connolly and the 2nd set of twins wereMartin and Michael. As far as I know Michael is buried in Kilnadeema. There were 2 other brothers then namely Edward and Thomas born in 1876 and 1877 respectivly. From what we are trying to piece together they may have emmigrated to America circa 1900. I cant find anything else about these 2 brothers and it is their wherabouts I am trying to find out.  My grandmother was next in the family born in 1879. She married a Denis Connolly from Strongfort. Craughwell, (where I also live now)Co.Galway in 1910. She had a younger sister Bridget who died when she was 6 years old. Then a brother James who I know moved to Loughrea and some other locations also. He is buried in Loughrea as is his sister Margaret. The last member of that family was Denis and he moved to Birr where he is buried. I dont know where Martin is buried. I do know that he married late in life and that they had no family. Patrick the eldest I think went to live in Gort,Co.Galway.I dont have any information on him either. Is there anyone out there that might know something about this family? And could help me or  point me in the right direction of where to look for these missing men.

Mary -  some info below that may be of help...

Booleydorrish or Booleendorrish was in the parish of Ardrahan many years ago It is between Castledaly and Scalp Cross by a river! There is a deserted village there in the forest thats just ruins now.  There were MC Tigues living there.  There is a McTigue man buried in Castledaly Church from that family . There are also a younger generations of McTigues living about three miles from Kinvara on the Ardrahan road

The old record from Scalp School Reunion book states that Pat MCTigue Booleydorrish was married to Catherine Joyce of Dereen. They had one son and four daughters Son Pat married a Mary Spellman and lived in Lisadulta, Peterswell, Winnie Married Pake Hansberry lived in Shragh Peterswell,Annie married Paddy Moloney, Mary didn?t marry and Brigie died young. Pat is buried in Castledaly but he was a close connection to the McTigues who live down near Kinvara. In a history of Scalp school there is mention of a  Mr McTigue on the board of the school. Sonnagh School opened around 1891.

  • Thank you for the information you gave me on the McTigues. I followed up on it and made contact with 3rd cousins of mine as a result of that. I am still looking for any information that anyone may have on the Connollys of Sonnagh. My great grandfather was Martin Connolly  and was married to Bridget McTigue. His father was John Connolly and was married to Mary?. Dont have a maiden name for her. I dont know if any of them had any siblings. If they did what became of them. I would also like to know what happened to the house and farm or whatever smallholding they had. Also where are they buried. Thanks again. Mary Connolly.

  • Hi Mary

I remember going to the bog in Sonnagh when I was younger. I remember passing the old school in sonnagh and old Mrs McTigue used to often be there. I think she lived in the house beside the school.

I had a look at your family tree and your grandmother Mary Connolly. You mentioned she had 8 brothers and 1 sister.( so 10 in family) From my research I can see there were actually 11 in family.

The names are John Anthony, Patrick J, Martin, Michael, Edward, Thomas, Mary, Bridget, James, Margaret and Denis.

I think Margaret was missing from your list. I don't know a whole lot about the connolly family but I heard my dad talking about them. A friend of my sister's is Sandra Connolly from Kileenadeema and she is descended from one of these Connolly men.

I can ask my dad if he knows anything more.

    Regards

Thanks for info. Yes it would be great if your dad knew anything more about them. Aunt Maggie(one I keft out) luved in Loughrea and had no family. Found descendants of Denis. Knew descendants of John. Also found descendants of James in Cong. Bridget died as a child. Mary was my grandmother. From what I heard Martin married but no family. Michael never married and lived with Maggie for a while. Regarding Patrick I dont know anything. And Edward and Thomad seem to have vanished altogether. Would be great to shed some light on what may have happened to those 3.
    Thanks again
    Happy new year to you.
    Cheers Mary.
