Background:

My grandfather was James Quinn born in Manchester 1879
His father was Peter Quinn I believe born 1840 around Gormanston, Balbriggan or Stamullen or Balrothery
Peter married Mary Doggett (variations Dagett) in 1863 in England
Mary was born at Drogheda in 1844

Peter's father as shown on marriage certificate was a John Quinn
Mary's father was a James Doggett who married a Elizabeth Walsh (possibly Welsh)
Later Elizabeth was widowed and came to live with Peter and Mary in England

Brickwall:
Family legend says there was a connection with Gormanston Castle and my uncle James Francis born 1908 in Manchester (son of James) used to visit Ireland play with the infant child of Lady Preston
We also have photo of James Francis visiting Gormanston in the 1950's but I understand it was then a Franciscan School and James Francis was a priest in Nottingham

Attach is a photo and would like to identify the people

We have a letter from a lady called Lenehan to my aunt Mary Quinn again 50+ years old so could this be the lady in question?
We also know that

Mary Quinn used to visit a Bridget and Lizzie Martin on the Gormanston estate

Corroboration is difficult, Since it is likely John or Peter Quinn were empolyed at Gormanston I tried writing to the current Viscount Preston in London but have received no reply.I have been told Gormaston papers are registered in Ireland National archives?

Hoping you can help and thanking you for considering

Sincerely

Terry Quinn

  • Hello Terry - like you, I have an ancestor with a connection to the Gormanstown estate. My ancestor, Alexander Watt, was employed as a gamekeeper on the estate for many years starting from around the 1850-60s. His wife was also employed by the estate in some capacity. Originally from Scotland, when Alexander died in 1904, Viscount Gormanstown erected a monument stone to him in the cemetery in Stamullen. Like you, I would like to find out if there is any mention of Alexander and his family in the Gormanstown estate papers. I live in Canada, so that will have to wait until I can get over. FYI, the Gormanstown Papers are in the National Library MSS-42,021, 44,346-462 & MSL 128. MS,398/1 is a male servants ledger (including servants name, position and yearly wage, 1796-1860 [70 pages]). Perhaps your relatives might show up in that list. I had luck finding mention of Alexander in the local papers, doing business for the estate (animal sales, etc). You might find useful early birth records on the RootsIreland website. Good luck!

  • Hello, as I know, Gormanston Castle has played a role in preserving Irish heritage and culture. The castle's chapel is home to a collection of stained glass windows designed by renowned Irish artist Harry Clarke. These windows are considered significant examples of early 20th-century Irish stained glass artistry.

  • Thank you, all information is gratefully received. My search now seems to centre upon Gormanston, Stamullen Parish records and families, and possibly Drogheda (Craven Ironworks) and Balbrigganto tie together the Quinn family and the Scott family with 6Doggets, Carey and Carroll. Hopefully someone in the area will have traced some records which tie us together.

    Thanks you anticipation

  • I believe it possible the connection with Gormanston is a Miss Welch (Walsh / Welsh) who married into the extended Viscount Preston family.

Does anyone have a way of tracing this Miss Welch and her famiy?

  • Research indicates my Quinn roots are from Skerries and Balbriggan.

Still trying to find Gormanston connection. Have a 80 / 100 year old  letter from Bridget Lenehan and Lizzie Martin of Gormanston referring to my great grandma Quinn/Scott. Anyone help with contacts?
