Over on Wikitree I have been adpoting Houlihans (no relation) and using online records to add birth, marriage, death, maiden name, name correction, etc. information I find. One of the Houlihan families has church and civil records that indicate that they lived in either Ardywanig or Ballinoe. Most of the church records have the location as Ardywanig (various spellings) in the parish of Firies (which the NLI shows is a variant name for Molahiff), while most of the civil records give Ballinoe, register's district of Milltown, superintendent register's district of Killarney, union of Killarney.

Using Google Maps I was able to locate Ardywanig, but not Ballinoe. I was wondering if Ballinoe is a variant name for Ardywanig or a location within it, or a non longer existant townland. I would appreciate any information on this Ballinoe and how it may be connected to Ardywanig.

Thanks

  • Dear Sean:

Thank you for your post to the Ireland Reaching Out message board.

According to the Placenames Database, Ardywanig is a townland which is located in the civil parish of Kilnanare.  https://www.logainm.ie/en/23589?s=Ardywanig

As to the crossover between civil parish and Catholic parish, the Catholic parish churches are Firies and Ballyhar.  There is a very helpful site that might give you further information as to the other catholic churches which are located very close to Kilnanare civil parish:  https://www.swilson.info/rcparishlink.php?seldioceseid=17&selrcparid=693&parl=1&lmode=map&anch=0&bsrch=

There isn't any reference to Ballinoe in either website.  I have also checked the Ordinance Survey maps online and there is also no reference to Ballinoe within the townland of Ardywanig or outside of it (close by).  It sounds as if it may have been a local place name which has died out or is only known to the local community who live there.  The name would suggest that it was a new homestead/town, and it may mean that the Houlihans occupied this area which became known as Ballinoe, Ardywanig.  You might consider writing an email to the Local History Studies section at Kerry Library.  Their email address is:  localhistory@kerrylibrary.ie

If you have any further questions, please let us know.

    Kind regards,

    Jane.
