I have been searching for my great grandmothers family for awhile and found that she was born in Tipperary. I recently got a copy of her death certificate in Troy, NY and it states her birth date is Dec 14, 1871.  All census i have show her born Dec 1869 so don't know which one is correct. The death certificate shows father as John Cahill and mother as what i think is Bridget Briggs. Can't completely make out last name but I think that is what it is. Anyone have any information on where i can go from here to find more information on those people?

  • Briggs not very common name in Tipperary . As attached John Briggs had property rented in 1850 at Dorrha North Tipperary near the Galway border. Cahill would be a common there also. Seamus Fox a fellow Tipp person - e mail foxseamus@gmail.com

  • Thank you for the information on the rented house. I guess the Briggs may not necessarily be from Tipperary Bridget could have been from somewhere else and then married john Cahill and then settled in Tipperary. That won't make it easy to find out something on Margaret's mother. Maybe i should concentrate on John Cahill but that also sounds like a more common name and may not be easy to pinpoint which is him without any birth information.

John Briggs and Mary Hogan had a family of 5-6 children.  John was an english officer and Mary was a local. The marriage cost John his commission. Both parents died in the flu epidemic and kids were dispersed. One or more went to Australia. I have tracked their descendants but they are not interactive.  Two daughters left the convent at 18 and came to USA NYC. One died on the trip. Second, my great grandmother married well and is part of long family history.  One brother later came and was involved in horses. One child stayed and became the local postmaster in Tipperary.  Would like more history if anyone knows. norm.quinn@gmail.com
