  • In this example I was looking for a Minnie and Catherine Wiley sisters parents unknown.

How I did it was to use the pay to view site

    http://rootsireland.ie/

I did firstly a national search for Minnie which threw up a couple both in Antrim. I then switched to County Antrim.

By playing about with the date range I was able to narrow down the baptism to a specific year. I still have not used the pay to view option yet nor used up any of my limited number of free previews. Once I had a Minnie I had to find her parents first names. I started with father first name a - this would bring up any firstnames starting with "a". Working through the alphabet got me to H when I got a hit adding further letters and worked out father was Hugh. Search then for Wiley children no firstname father Hugh within ten years of Minnie. Got 6 hits and using same technique was able to work out the 6 names - but no Catherine. Minnie is a common nickname so reverted to Catherine. Broad search found two which narrowed down to one in 1868 and one in 1872. Was able to work out 1868 was daughter of John and Mary. Broad search found no other children to this couple. 1872 Catherine was daughter of John and Jane and a broad search threw up 9 children. Plodding through the alphabet got me Alexander, Eliza, Catherine, Eleanor, Francis, John, James, Samuel, Wilhemina, which was more complicated since it is usually spelled WilheLmina.  Catherine I knew was 1872, and bit of playing about with date range got me 1881 for Wilhemina. Age gap fits the two sisters although the ages are well out - no surprises there!

You can play about with the dates until you match up the other 7 children. You can refine it a bit more by choosing one child then working your way through the drop down menu of the various parishes until you get a hit. Then you can see if all the other children were also in the same parish. Bearing in mind couples did move about as well as changing churches. It is quite possible that these 9 children were born to more than one couple named John and Jane.  Getting one transcript should give mothers maiden name and doing a broad search for baptisms to John and Jane with new surname hopefully should confirm 9 children. However many older records do not list mother's maiden name. Using this technique you can gain a lot of data without using up your limited number of free searches or having to buy any transcripts.

  • Dear Doreen,

    After quickly looking up some transcriptions of various birth records from Beagh parish on my computer I found a Thomas Carroll born in 1855 in Beagh Parish. He was born the 9th of December to Thomas Carroll senior and Bridget Fogarty. You can see the transcriptions on my own personal website at the following web address;

    http://beaghrootsgalway.weebly.com/parish-baptisms-1850-6.html

However, another quick search shows that a Thomas Carroll and Biddy (often a nickname for Bridget) Fogarty have another child baptised on the 29th of June 1858. Unfortunately the child's first name is inelligible. This may prove not to be your family, or even disprove the knowledge of him being an only child.

Again in 1861 we see they have another child named Peter on 30 March, the parents this time listed as Tom Carroll and Bridget Fogerty

One possible way of finding out Thomas' parents name is to try and locate his marraige certicificate if he married. Irish marraige certificates will usually give the name of at least the groom's father and residence, which will make your search for Thomas' parents easier. Armed with the father's first name sites like www.rootsireland.ie will be a lot easier to navigate and obtain the records relating to your family.

The name Fogarty (Bridget's maiden name) is one locally associated with the nearby village of Crusheen in Co Clare, the Clare Library being spot on with their advice. Unluckily none of the baptism entries I mentioned above list a townland, but hopefully that marriage certificate may prove more fruitful.

    Best of luck!

  • thank you so much beagh for getting back to me. it was really a big help. i have one aunt alive and  refuses to tell me anything. i knew there was a peter born but did not assosiate it with our family. i think he died at 7 years of age.. is cregg demise in galway?  is drumcore in doon? by the way thank you for reminding me to get grandads long marriage cert. i have the short one. they got married 5 oct. 1910 in gort or tiernievan. i have been in record office in galway and walked away without it. your web site is a great help. too bad the irish records do not go back further.

i knew fogartys in drumcore but do not know if they were related. never heard different. a man by the name of jack flanagan used to come to the house and i always thought he was related.

there is another question i need to ask before i say this is my family.

i do know for a fact there was another thomas carroll  about the same age as grandad. he was from tubber. i had spoke to a lady that used to come and play with my aunts and she was related to this thomas carroll. she was the one that told me this information.

the same thing happened with my dads family. there was 2 men that died about the same time with the same name do you believe.lol.

i need to eliminate the tubber man can you help?

thanks again for your help. doreen

  • Dear Doreen,

Cregg Demesne is in Galway and was owned by the Butler Family of Clare/Galway. There is plenty of information about them on the Clare Library Website at this link

    http://www.clarelibrary.ie/eolas/coclare/genealogy/butlers/butlers.htm

I would also recommend reading the 2 local parish history books if you can track a copy of them down, especially

the first book, 'Beagh A History and Heritage'. Drumcore is a townland in the parish of Crusheen / Inchicronan, but would be associated with Doon.

I found their marraige cert on rootsireland.com and have attached the information I found as well as the census records I believe belong to your Thomas Carroll, if he is the same man that married Bridget Carr. Interestingly on the marraige cert it lists Carheenybaun as a townland for Thomas, Terneevin for Bridget. But it appears in the 1911 census for Bridget and Thomas that he is from Clare

    http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Clare/Caher/Drumcore/370520/

As for the other Thomas Carroll, I need some more information to help you rule him out, approximate birthdates/deathdates, townlands, family member names etc. Anything at all that would help

  • good morning beagh, could you send me your name as it is not nice to call you beagh lol. thank you again for getting back to me and i cant believe you found thomas and bridgets long marriage info. michael as father really throws me off. looked at some records i have and thomas bought land in carheenebaun in june 1904 28 acres. in july 1904 he bought an acre in drumcore, in conjuction with folio3698 which was the folio number for the 28 acres.

i can not find carheenebaun on any of the maps peter sent me from the clare library. i do know the house where thomas and bridget lived was on the left side of the road going towards ennis and their land was accross the street. i am assuming that it was called carheenebaun? i believe thomas built the house for his bride. i go there when i go home to visit chris halloran. she bought it when my uncle died.

peter sent me paper from griffiths 1855 and in cregg demise there was a peter and james i think. interesting if thomas had a brother peter that may have been called after that peter. father callahan wrote to me and said a thomas carroll from tubber was born in 1904 but that is too late as apparently the thomas carroll from tubber was around grandads age. i do not know any other information about him.

it is interesting to note that a mary carroll was a sponsor for peter. i wonder  if she was related, probally was.it is strange that thomas states he was born in clare if cregg is in galway. very confusing as he was a highly intelegent man. if you look on census he got younger in 1911. lol. he lived in knockmeal for awhile as he herded for peter tierney who gave him the house in knockmeal to live in.he was also active in the irb. there was a 30 year difference in his and bridgets age.

got to go now as i have to go to the store. thanks again for all your help.
