Hello,

My 2nd great Grandfather, Patrick Edward O'Connor, born March 17, 1820/1821 and his wife Johanna Connor, born August 4, 1833, were both from Killarney area. Johanna's mother might be  named Mary Mahoney and father might be Thomas Connor. I have no record on the parents of Patrick but he and his parent immagrated to the U.S. when he was 7-12 year old or so. He dropped the O in his name to seem more american, but remained proud of his Irish Heritage. He became a famous General and founded Ft Douglas, Salt Lake City, Utah. He met Johanna and they married in 1854.

I'd love to find their families in Ireland to continue my research of our family. I look forward to hearing from you. Thanks so much for having this site to help us find our Irish Heritage!

Sincerely,

Shelby G. Pike

  • Hi Maureen, Thanks so much for getting back to me. I'm not sure that the first family by the name of Connor is the correct family or not. I looked up when the Irish famine happened and it started in 1845. Patrick was already in America and in 1945 he became a naturalized citizen. If you check out the links below you will see that a lot of sites mention him dropping the O' after he came to America. This is also mention in the books that have been written about him:

    1. Madsen, Brigham D. Glory Hunter: A Biography of Patrick Edward Connor. (1990) ISBN 978-1-60781-154-1

    2. Rogers, Fred B., Soldiers of the Overland: Being some account of the services of General Patrick Edward Connor & his Volunteers in the Old West, Grabhorn Press (1938), hardcover, 292 pages

Colonel Connor Filled a Varied, Dramatic Role in Utah

    Brigadier General Patrick Edward Connor

This last link was done by my second cousin Jake Fletcher about Patrick Connor. He also had info on another irish relative my great grandfather BP Oliver. He has found more info about the Olivers who are from Galway. I also was told that the Olivers are related to Oliver St Gogarty, possibly thru his marraige to a Margaret Oliver, but I'll have to do more research on that. If you check out Jake's site more and look at the Olivers that are from Galway, you can see that they were proud of their Irish heritage and the Roman Catholic Church. It's a wonderful site and hope you enjoy checking it out…

Your info on Johanna Connor seems to be correct with the dates matching. I've seen these names on other family trees about our family. Is there any O'Connors in the vicinity of Killarney, or in another area of Kerry County. Some of the info on him say he lived near the lakes of Killarney. I've tried to find records of a Patrick O'Connor arriving in New York, and found one on 1827, but can't find any info on his family or him living in New York till he joined the US Army in 1839 at the age of 19. Will keep searching. Thanks again for getting back to me. Sincerely Shelby

  • Dear Shelby,

I am interested in the info here! I was trying to find out more about what Connor's life would be like in Ireland and his lineage there. Keep me apprised of anything you come up with, thanks for your good work.

  • I'm not having much luck finding Patrick or his parents Edward Connor and Catherine Dillon, if that is their correct names. I found their names thru a docent from the Lathrop house in Redwood City who has reached out to me and we've been collaborating together thru 2013. She supplied me with Patrick's sister's name Margaret Theresa Connor who listed the names of her parents above. Unfortunately I keep hitting dead ends! I have found a great site that maybe you would be interested in. Someone above gave me the link but it wasn't good but here is the correct link:

    http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/

This is a great site and will keep using it and try using different variations of the names.

I have the information of Johanna Connor's birth and parents. that's listed above on a post, but is not online yet! here's her info. I hope you can read that post done Feb 21, 2012.

Hopefully more info will be put up online and make our research much easier. Will let you know if I find anymore clues. I wish someone in the family had Katherine Connor Oliver's first diary cause that would have more info about her early life in Utah and maybe more about her grandparents! Thanks for reaching out and I'll be in touch when I find out anything! Take Care! Shelby
