I am looking for the area from which James Handy might have come. He was from Ireland and said to be born October 4, 1837. A US census in 1870 listed him as a Minister. In the family Bible, he was called "Elder." I would appreciate any leads to his family.

Thank you

  • Hi Angela,

Do you know any other names, maybe the name of his parents ?

The reason I am asking is because we need some extra information to narrow the search down

There were 3 people with the name James Handy baptised in Ireland in 1837, one in county Leitrim, one in county Meath and one in county Monaghan

Maybe if you could obtain his US death certificate it could give his parents names

    • I do not know of his parents names. There is NO death certificate that I am aware of. James is said to have disappeared in the 1880's in Tennessee. Some say he was murdered by Indians, others say he returned to Ireland for church work, and others say he just left. The family Bible begins with James and his wife Jane. No parents are listed for either. It has been a frustrating search to say the least. I do know of James Handy's childrens names. I know that it is not conclusive, but many children were named after a couples parents. Their children were Daniel, Harrison, John William, Sarah Emiline, Isaac Eric, Mary Susan and Elmore Murry. All with the surname Handy.
    • I also know that the census records and family stories state that James Handy is from Ireland. I found the birthdate in the family Bible as well. I only wish his parents were listed.
    • Thank you for the leads on the 3 counties. This is a great discovery. Perhaps it is a start in the right direction.

  • I stumbled across this in searching for James Handy, born October 4, 1837.  This is my husband's 2 X great grandfather.  You said that you had a family Bible.  May I ask what line that would have been passed down through?  James and Sarah Jane Atkinson's son, Harrison, is my husband's great grandfather.  Harrison had a son named James who is his grandfather.  His father's name is Harrison, born in 1921.  Harrison and my husband's mother, Dorothy were divorced when my husband was 7.  He saw VERY little of him through most of his life.  I have tried to pull together his father's side of the family together since the early 2000's.

Have you been to or seen the Handy Farm iin Cynthiana, KY where James and Sarah Jane were placed in the 1870 census?  We went twice and viewed the town, a museum, and the farm but we have yet to make a connection.  We are interested in finding out if there is any.

  • I have not been to the farm, but I would love to explore Cynthiana. My great grandfather was Isaac Eric Handy, the older Harrison's brother. Contact me at my new email agwilson721@gmail.com

  • Hello, my mom and I are looking for any info on a Samuel Wesley Handy. We are led to believe that his father's name was Samuel as well and he built a castle in Westmeath County, Ireland called Bracca Castle. After his father Samuel died, Samuel Wesley inherited Bracca Castle through his father's will.

If anyone has any more info please email me at erineast95@yahoo.com

    Thank you.
