Looking for information on Michael Casey b. 1835 in Corlealackagh. Father Peter Casey b. 1790. Mother Ellen McCarron b. 1810. Siblings Owen b. 1830; Patrick 1831; Francis 1831; and Bernard b. 1837 m Rose Flanagan. I am trying to determine if Michael, the uncle of Bernard J. Casey b. 1870 in Corklealackagh to Peter Casey (1831-1903) and Ellen Markey (1835-1907) is my 2nd great grandfather. Bernard J. Casey immigrated to Brooklyn, NY in 1888 and died in Brooklyn 16 Sept. 1943. Bernard J. was a pickle merchant in Brooklyn and then moved to Ulster Co., NY from approx. 1915 to 1936. He owned a 47 acre fruit farm in Marbletown/Saugerties. Any info on Michael would be appreciated, especially whether he immigated to NY or remained in Ireland. My Michael immigrated to NY probably 1840-1850 and lived in Saugerties, Rosendale, Hurley and Kingston. Thank you.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Unfortunately, we are constrained by the availability of baptismal and marriage records for Clontibret parish where your Casey ancestors worshiped. Baptisms start in 1843 and marriages in 1860. Bernard Casey was baptized in December 1869 and was likely born a few days before he was baptized. He had at least five other siblings Thomas 1861 Anne 1863 William 1866 James 1868 Mary 1871 The parrents were likely married right before 1860. (Civil registration did not begin until 1864.)

I looked at the 1861 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Clontibret civil parish and there were many Caseys in the parish including six properties in Corlealackagh townland: Anne, Bernard, Francis, Mary, Michael, Patrick Not sure which one was your direct line since no Peter is listed. https://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/monaghan/clontibret.htm

in the 1901 census, there were still six Casey households in Corlealackagh http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Monaghan/Cremartin/Corlealackagh/

There are very few shipping records from Ireland and the best place to look would bin USA records but finding records from the 1840s and 1850s is difficult. Was Michael still living in 1900. If so, the census would have info on when he came into the country based on his recollection.

I think at this time, it will be difficult to prove that Michael was your great-great grandfather primarily because there were so many Caseys in Corlealackagh.

Let me know what questions you have.
