My Irish ancestors left Ireland in the mid 19th century. An obituary in our local New York State newspaper in Penn Yan, New York says that Mary Dale, daughter of Owen Hoban and Alice Plunkett, was born at Castle Plunket, county of Roscommon. She emigrated in 1866 with her husband Luke Dale and her family to a township in our county called Jerusalem. Mary Hoban Dale died in 1875, making her birthdate about 1818. Her husband, Luke, is listed in the US census as having been born around 1820, but I have seen widely varying dates for his birth. Luke Dale Junior was born around 1847.

I believe that my great gradfather John Hoban might have been Mary Hoban Dale's brother. I can find no mention of Owen Hoban or his wife in the area, though, or John, or Mary. Does anyone know where I can search? Thank you!

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Unfortunately, the RC records for that area do not start until 1865 for baptisms and 1864 for marriages. So finding records for the your Hobans and  Dales will not be possible.

The 1855 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Baslick civil parish  http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/roscommon/baslick.htm  does show Luke Dale in Castleplunket and three Hoban widows including Catherine in Castleplunket.

There were no Hobans or Dales in the parish in the 1901 census.

You can add the story of Luke and Mary to our XO Chronicles site  https://www.irelandxo.com/ireland-xo/history-and-genealogy/ancestor-dat…

You may also want to consider autosomal DNA testing.

  • Thank you so much! I had seen that listing for Luke Dale on the Griffiths. I also found a family group with all the right names (Luke Dale, Mary Dale, Luke Dale) on the passenger lists for the City of Limerick, departing Liverpool and Queenstown, arriving in New York 4 April 1866. That tallies with the year given in Mary's obitutary - but the ages are wildly off. I wonder if it is simply the recording of the ages that is wrong - that it might be my family.

I will look at the three Hoban widows, and add what I know about the Dales to the XO Chronicles.

I have done the DNA testing for Ancestry so I am hoping to get information that way at some point.

And most importantly, I will be visting Ireland for the very first time this year - and will be visiting Castleplunkett and Castlerea.

    Thank you again!

  • Hi Stephanie!

You may want to look into Gedmatch www.gedmatch.com   Gedmatch is a volunteer run site where you can load your raw Ancestry DNA data and see if you match anyone who tested with another company (and also loaded their data to Gedmatch). It expands you matching pool.

When are you going to Ireland? We like to how many of our "customers" are visiting each year. Thanks!
