Hi everyone!

I've been researching my family genealogy lines for about two decades now, and yet my family name line has been the hardest one to crack!

My 4x great grandpa Morgan Hooley was born in Ireland but I haven't been able to pin down exact dates for him (other than death date) and I have no info about his life in Ireland. Here's what I (think) I know:

He was possibly born in 1821, but almost certainly 1820-1823. I've seen some records made by other researchers that say he was born in Tipperary County, but I have no way to substantiate that. One record said 'Barnak Parish' but I couldn't find a Parish with that name. He emigrated to America between 1840 and 1842. His wife was named Mary or Margaret Coffee/Coffey, who was also born in Ireland. I'm not sure what year they married or where it took place. Morgan's parents may have been named Michael and Ann.

I know much more about his life in America. He worked as an iron moulder in Troy, NY and one of his sons, James, became a state senator. His children were Morgan, James, Jane, Mary, and Ellen.

I know this is very little to go on, but if anyone has any insight on where my next research steps lie or if there are any Hooley's out there who think this story sounds familiar, please let me know! Through my research I was able to find my cousin Tim who still lives in NY (I'm in WA)...he's on the same generational level as my dad's dad and has spent much more time researching our line, but even he couldn't find much about Morgan. He did let me know that Morgan is buried at St. James Cemetery in Troy, and not only is he in an unmarked grave, but the cemetery records have his burial recorded as Marjorie Hooley! This injustice is the icing on the cake that has made me determined to make sure Morgan is not forgotten!

Thank you in advance for any help you can provide!

  • As Morgan was born c1820 to 1823, looking for Hooley in Tipperary lists these names in the Tithe records.

One is in the Parish of Roscrea and the other in the Parish of Bourney (Tithe records 1823 to 1837)
The Tithe Applotment Books, 1823-37 (nationalarchives.ie)

The Map of Bourney  and Roscrea, they are near each other.
    Townlands in Bourney

Were they Catholic? is they were ......look in here
Roscrea, Killaloe - Catholic Parish Registers at the NLI

The next place to look for info is here, I have looked for Hooley in the Griffiths Valuation (1837 to 1864)
    Griffith's Valuation (askaboutireland.ie)

Moving to 1901 Census in Ireland there are 24 names listed in the same area.
    More searching can be done.

I will watch for a reply.
    Cheers

  • Hello, I'm actually related to Morgan Hooley as well. He's my 3x Great Grandfather. My Grandmother was Kathryn Hooley. Her father was George, whose father was Morgan, whose father was Morgan. Are you on Ancestry?
