I will be travelling to Ireland and visiting the Wexford area. I have been told there are still some Carton's in that area. My Mother's maiden name was Carton and my grand father's Grand parents James and Bridget Carton were from Wexford and got married in Wexford, I am not sure of the "parish" or any other info, would appreciate any assistance in finding out more for my family tree and try to trace any living relatives from my Grandfather's side of the family. Bridget and James came to the United States via NYC and settled in Coshocton, Ohio. Bridget died in 1907. Bridget's maiden name was North.

Mary Claire:
Carton was a fairly common surname in Co. Wexford in the mid-19th century. There were 52 Carton households.
I searched on two different subscription sites but could not locate the marriage record. Do you have an approximate year for when James and Bridget emigrated? The 1853 Griffiths Valuation head of hosuehold listing for Co. Wexford listed three James Carton records in Ferns parish. The word before Ferns is the townland.

Were any of their children born in Ireland?
When do you plan to visit?

Hello Roger and a million thanks for your help in research! According to an obituary from a my hometown in Ohio Bridget North and her husband James Carton who preceded her in death (so he died prior to her death 1907) they had seven children, two of which died in Ireland. "Two little graves were left in Ireland". So maybe that is where we can look as well- the cemeteries of Wexford.
Also according to her obituary she and James came to the United States around 1853. Additionally I have and some of my records and I'm not sure where I gathered this from maybe ancestry.com or something but James I believe was a James Thomas Carton and I have an estimated birth date of August 1st 1820 and our first date of Bridget of 1824 or possibly 1825.
I plan on visiting next month, be in that area around May 5th,6th or 7th.Mary Claire

Mary Claire:
If James and Bridget left in 1853 likely he was not leasing land at the time of the Griffiths which was also in 1853.
The two children died during the Famine, I would not expect there would be a marker/headstone to identify where they were buried.
I did not find any baptismal records for children of James Carton and Bridget North. I also did not find a Bridget North baptismal record around 1824/1825. I found a James Cortin baptismal record July 31 1820 in the Ballyoughter RC parish father Patt Cortin mother Rose Bryan Without other evidence, it would be difficult to confirm this record.
Keep in mind that some parishes had late starting records in the 1800s which may be why a marriage reocrd and baptismal records for the children can't be found.

Thank you Roger, So where do I go from here? Any suggestions? How do I widen my search of the Wexford area when I cannot be sure of their "parish" only that I know for sure Bridget came from County Wexford. I was told my a family member that Carton's remain in Ferns and that is what directed me your way. I'd like to reach out to find out as much as I can prior to my trip so that I physically go to the right area. Thank you again for any assistance. Where are very old church records kept if there are any?
