Hello,

I am traveling to Ireland this summer and am looking forward to seeing the ancestral areas that all of ancestors came from. John Welch who is my mother's grandfather was born in Dec 1829 in County Donegal. Sorry but I have no more information to add.

Thanks for any assistance you can offer,

  • Hi Susan,

    I had a look on www.rootsireland.ie/ for John's birth/baptism but didn't have much luck I'm afraid.

There are 28 Welch / Welsh birth/baptism records including 2 Johns but neither is December 1829

I couldn't find him in the 1851 Census & there are no Welches in Donegal in Griffiths Valuation.

The Tithe Applotments (free at http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/) have 3 Welch listings: 2 in 1834: James Aughewig Killybegs & Patt Corness Killybegs

1 in 1825: no first name Town Tenements Donegal Donegal; I was wondering if any of these could have been his father. If you know the names of his children and IF he followed the Irish naming pattern in naming his children, the first son was named after the father's father.

Here is a possible death record from roots: (graveyard not mentioned!!) It is the only one with birth year around 1829

    Name:JohnWalshDate of Death:09-Jun-1865
    Age:37Parish / District:STRANORLARAddress:Stranorlar WorkhouseCounty:Co. DonegalStatus:MarriedDenomination:Civil RecordOccupation:PAUPERSex:Male

i had a look in the Irish phone book for Welch in Donegal but had no luck there either.

Do you happen to know his religion?
