Hello,

I am looking for information about my great grandfather Alexander Percival Selman, born in 1869 in Birr.

As this seems a quite unusual Surname in Ireland, I was wondering if someone already came across it.

Thank you!

Kind regards,

Rainer H?rtlein

  • Hello Rainer,

I went to www.rootsireland.ie to search but they have no records at all for the name Selman.    I went to www.irishgenealogy.ie and found two records for Selman but neither seemed to match any of your details.   I also went to www.askaboutireland.ie and searched Griffithe Valuation but to no avail.  there are no records for a family of Selman owning  or renting land in the mid 1800.

I looked at the irishcensus online and found two Selmans in the 1901 census and one Selman in the 1911.  It's a very rare name here.

    Sorry I can't help,

    Anne Dennehy

  • Hi Rainer,

I found a record for an Alexander Salmon born in co. meath in 1820.  The name Alexander is quite rare and the combination with Salmon raised a question in my head.   Could it be possible that this man is related to your Alexander.  As you probably know , many surnames changed as they crossed the sea.  Names were recorded phonetically.

Just a thought.  I think the record may be worth a look.
