I have many DNA matches with people who are descended from ancestors with the Daunt surname, however I can't find out how I am linked to this Daunt family. Most Daunts seem to be from County Cork and I can find many family trees on various websites going far back to the 1500s in England, but they don't seem to link with this Daunt family in Limerick.

Susan Daunt names her parents as William Daunt and Ellen (already deceased) on her arrival record in Australia Sep 1864. I can find a marriage for her probable parents (Ellen Condon) in Cork in 1840 and their burials in Annagh, Limerick in 1898 and 1849 (also a probable brother Thomas b1842 in Cork and d1922 Limerick).

I really need to get another generation back to find my family link I think. The most likely branch of my family were Catholic and had surname Kearney / Kearns - known to have been in Waterford area and Tyrone, but moved around in the British Army.

Any suggestions and ideas very welcome, as I would love to find my Irish Roots!

Many thanks,

Dee

  • Hello Dee, I have a few days left in Ancestry, so I will help as much as I can.
    You say....
Susan Daunt names her parents as William Daunt and Ellen (already deceased) on her arrival record in Australia. I can find a marriage for her probable parents (Ellen Condon) in Cork in 1840 and their burials in Annagh, Limerick in 1898 and 1849.

I looked at the 1898 death for William the place is Annacotty, near to Lisnagy.
The Thomas you mentioned his death in 1922 is in a place called Rivers this is in Annacotty he was 81 then and a carpenter.
In the 1911 Census he was in Rivers, Ballyvarra which is the same place and was born in Cork.
The only Thomas Daunt I could find born between 1840 and 1845 is this one.
Right hand page 3rd down 14th January (14 just about make it out) Father Joseph Daunt and Julia Collins.
I search ancestry then go to the Ireland Church books.
04805/05, Dunmanway - Catholic Parish Registers at the NLI
He also had a sister Ellen born 9th June 1833.

Looking for William and Ellen as patents…… Are you sure Condon is Ellen’s surname?
Where did you see this, please.
    I saw this
04805/03, Dunmanway - Catholic Parish Registers at the NLI

Joseph Daunt 5th May 1833 father William Daunt and Ellen Collins.
The sponsors were Joseph Daunt and Mary Collins.

I still cannot find a birth for Susan.

You say…. You have seen a marriage for William Daunt and Ellen Condon.
Can you post this or say where you viewed it please.

    Now to this, you say…
The most likely branch of my family were Catholic and had surname Kearney / Kearns - known to have been in Waterford area and Tyrone, but moved around in the British Army.
What was his name and approx. age?
    Thanks

    Hi Margot,

Many thanks for taking the time to help me with this research. Apologies if this reply arrives twice - I saved a draft which then disappeared!

I found the marriage of William & Ellen and the baptism of Thomas on findmypast Ireland records - attached. I am not sure if they are the correct family, as in Cork not Limerick, but they do tie in with the gravestone in Annagh.

Regarding Kearney - It is Mary Kearney or Kearns - from the English census 1851 and 1861 she states that she was born what looks like Clogher,  County Tyrone in 1830. She married a soldier Robert Mitchell  sometime before the 1851 census, unknown where or when (their 1st known child Margaret Lucy born Portsmouth 1852.) Mitchell family appears to be Scottish protestant, but several of their children were re-baptised in RC church in Waterford after being previously baptised in various garrison churches. This Robert Mitchell was actually born Templebreedy, Cork 1828 - I think this is just because his father's regiment were stationed there at that time.

The problem is this Army connection, it seems to be very random as to what birth/marriage/death events actually got registered!

I will have a look at your findings,

    Thanks again,

    Dee

  • Hello Dee,
I have looked again at your Daunt family.
The marriage record is from the Diocese Book, this is all the information from the Parish books and is collated in Alpha form and logged. It doesn’t give the Parish or the Church.
    What a task!

What I would do is open a spreadsheet and starting with the 1901 census of Ireland put each Daunt family in a list, with the place that they live in.
Then go to the BDM and check each one.
I have done this to prove that a family in Nenagh, County Tipperary (8 families in all) are all related to one couple who came from County Clare.
It took a few weeks but I proved it.
From what I see, the Daunt's were a big family in Bandon, Cork City and all other areas in Cork.
A William Daunt died in 1887 in Bandon he was born in 1803 and from Passage West, parents were John Daunt and Catherine Walsh.
You can do it but it takes time.

    Woweee.....

I just got the William Daunt in a place called Killeenagarriff, just south of Annagh in 1852. The townland is Rivers.

So the Thomas Daunt who I found as a carpenter is Susan’s brother.
Just wondering if Susan was her second name.

    The Robert Mitchell.
There are 2 as you say always seem to be near to each other.
One is from County Monaghan and 3 years young than your Robert.

The place where they lived Templebreedy, is not far from Camden Fort, this was the Naval/Army base nearest town is Crosshaven. We watched a programme about Camden Fort on the and when we were over there we went around the Museum. Lovely place.

Castleconnell Parish records are from 1850 and Clogher in Tyrone are from 1856.

I will have another look for Susan or a birth of Daunt in 1840 to 1850.
    Cheers
    Margot

  • Late to the party, but hello! My great grandmother was Susan Daunt.  She came to Australia on the Wanata, arriving in Sydney on 3 September, 1864.  She married my Great Grandfather, George Wallington, on 5 January 1865 in St Mary's Cathedral, Sydney.  They had 10 children.

Susan died on 10 February, 1930 in Sydney and her Death Certificate lists her parents as William Daunt, Carpenter, and Ellen Condon.  She is buried with several family members at Rookwood Cemetery, Sydney.  I have visited the gravesite many times.

I can provide details of descendants and I do have a photo of Susan and George, but limited information on her parents.  I do believe the grave of William, Ellen and Thomas is most likely Susan's parents and brother.

Would love to hear from you and further our mutual knowledge of this line of the family.

    Kind regards

    Joanne

  • Hi Joanne,
I see the name of the house was "Killaloe"  that is the Diocese name for the area.

There is a death of William Daunt in a place called Rivers, this is the map.
    rivers, limerick - Search (bing.com)

    I uploaded the  death record

Also Thomas was not in 1901 Census but in the 1911 also attached.

  • I just found Thomas in 1901, it isn't very clear.
He was a Carpenter. The spelling was Dount    I have changed the spelling....takes a while to get it changed in the site.
