Hello i know from my grandparents im descended from mcGuires in Ireland but i dont know where and i dont have much information i know immigrated from ireland to New York possibly Ellis Island and then moved to Ohio to settle and some settled in Virginia

I would suggest you start with the Ellis Island site http://www.ellisisland.org/ and look for your ancestor. Possibly there will be contact info in the passenger record.Ellis Island has records starting with 1892. Later records around 1905 provide a contact person in Ireland in addition to the contact person in America.

The best thing to do is to start with what you know and work back, even if that means writing your own details on a blank page and adding info as far back as you can. Once you can identify the generation that emigrated from Irland you might be able to get a mariage or death cert that could give you a townland or parish name and it would be much, much easier to find what you need from there.
