I believe I may have found the passenger listing for some ancestors that came from Ireland. James Richey came from Donegal around 1800, with his wife, son John, and possibly other children. The ship the Ardent (1803) passenger listing matches names and dates of birth. It also provides a listing of the townships and counties of residence. The Richey family as well as many others on the ship were listed as coming from Doren, County Donegal. I've not been able to find this place on any historic maps, in books, Google searches, or ancestry.com searches.

Does anyone have any information on a place once called Doren?

There are townlands in Co. Donegal called Dore and Doorian but it is not likely that a large number of people would be coming from one townland. Can you attach the document so that we can see what is written and possibly help determine the place of origin.

  • Hi, I found an online transcription in which the place was called "Donan."  Perhaps this is the townland of "Doonan."

  • It is most likely "Doorin" which is an area west of Mountcharles.

  • Thanks, everyone, I anticipated an alternative spelling. I really appreciate this feedback. The early 1800s map was probably not detailed enough to show all townlands at that time. I'm attaching the passenger list from 1803. If there is a link or an attachment to a map with the townland that could be helpful.

  • Well, I'm rather embarrassed that I spelled the place name wrong in my original request. Please see the passage list - it's spelled Donan.

As Patricia pointed out Donan is likely Doonan which is in Killymard civil parish just to the west of Donegal town. Doonan townland is 183 acres in size.

The 1857 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing shows two Richey records in Killymard civil parish. John Richey Altadoo townland and William Richey in Eddrim Glebe townland so there is evidence that the surname was in the parish.

  • Though most pre 1901 Irish censuses have been destroyed, there are a few surviving fragments and parts of the censuses for Killymard parish for 1821, 1841 & 1851 exist. Mostly listing folk who were Church of Ireland but other denominations do appear.  So there are census details for the Altidoo & Glebe Richey/Ritchie families that Roger has found. See:
