Looking for James Armstrong DOB abt 1837 maybe in Aghalee, gunner royal Artillery, died London 3 Oct 1899, father Hugh. James joind the army young, Served in Ireland, Portsmouth, England, the Zulu war - ended up in commissairiat in London. Married Annie elizabeth clark 12 October 1874, St Luke's, Holborn,  London. buried 9 October 1899 London (probably Southwark but cemetery unknown). Protestant. Can NOT find army attestation document. Other army documents only state place of birth as Ireland OR may be for another James Armstrong.

Alternative place of birth might be Aghnahola, Currin, (Clones), Co. Monaghan, Ireland as this is in a Chelsea Pensioer document for A James Armstrong. Not sure if it correct for MY James but dates fit with change from regular army to Commissariat about 1876.

Have recently found many dna matches on ancestry with link of ARMSTRONG but NO common ancestor. Some trees have Allen Armstong born Co. Monaghan or Co. Leitrim other trees have Robert Armstrong born Co Antrim (tree owner thinks that is a TOWN !). Said Robert Armstrong is apparently something to do with Sons of the american Revolution & Historical Southern families.

James, Allen & Robert MUST be related as their descendants share DNA.

Had NEVER found any Armstrong relatives before but now have problem joining them to my tree on ancestry.

Help please.

TIA.

  • Thanks Patrica,

I have found the date for James birth as 27 August 1837 with those parents but could not understand why it was a dob NOT a baptism/christening? ALSO I had found another James Armstrong dob 20 Aug 1837 baptism 27 Aug 1837 at or of Clones, co. Monaghan BUT with parents Richard & Anne so we know that is wrong. BUT it is confusing to have 1 with NO baptism & 1 with both dob & baptism? Do you perhaps have the hyperlinks you used as I had the information from ancestry which is notoriously untrustworthy with clicky-copy family trees abounding !

Re Allen Armstrong - the date is too late for the Allen in all the trees who have descendants in Canada & USA that I dna match BUT as it is in Currin parish about the time MY Gt grandfather James Armstrong was born I infer that the families MUST be related as indeed we seem to be related to a Robert Armstrong of County Antrim who ended up in Tennessee USA. Again - do you perhaps have the hyperlinkyou used to find the information on rootsireland please ?

TIA of further assistance to help us join up the Irish ancestors so the English, Canadian & Amercan cousins can be joined up in the family tree.

  • PS. could anyone help me find the attestation i.e joining up document for my gt grandfather James Armstrong as above. His army number understood to be 199 BUT one document found seems to state army number 194. He was a gunner in Royal Artillery & in later life served with Commissariat & Mess living in Southwark then Covent Garden, London in a Peabody building, died 1899. He joined up young - possibly as young as age 12 or 14. We have a photo of him in uniform as a "bugle boy" with dog - see below.

All other army documents relating to him only state IRELAND as place of birth.

The Attestation will not only have his townland, parish & county of birth - it will also have where he joined up & the name of the recruiting officer.

    TIA.
