My 2nd great grandfather was John Flynn, who according to my late grandmother, was born in Solloghodbeg between 1838 and 1842 (his age differs according to the 1901 and 1911 census). About the age of 9 he moved from Solloghodbeg to Linfield in Pallas Grean/Nicker, Limerick. I believe his parents were Daniel Flynn and Margaret Brien.
He married Ellen Ryan of the Ryan/Malachy's but she died before the 1901 census and my grandmother had no memory of her other than she was of the Ryan/Malachy's. I don't know where or when she was born.
These relations are buried at Shronell Cemetery in Tipperary.
Any information regarding my ancestors would be so appreciated.
Thanks,
Kathy Hansen

Hi Kathy,
Thank you for your message.
Have you tried looking in church records for information? As civil registration did not begin until 1864, births marriages and deaths prior to this were recorded by the local parish church. Perhaps you may be able to find John?s birth certificate which would help you confirm his parents.
Most Catholic records are held locally so you may need to write to the local parish priest for possible assistance. One website that you may find useful is the Irish Times where they give an overview of what records are available in specific parishes. For Solloghodbeg parish, follow this link:
You can also see from this link where copies are available.
Most surviving Church of Ireland records are still held by the local clergy, although some are in the National Archives of Ireland and others are in the Representative Church Body Library in Dublin. Here are their websites: http://www.nationalarchives.ie/ and http://ireland.anglican.org/about/42
Lists of these surviving registers can also be found at the National Library of Ireland.
If John was married after 1864, you should be able to find his marriage certificate. This may give you some information on Ellen, such as her father?s name. Civil records are available from the General Register?s Office in Dublin. Here is their website:

I hope that some of this is helpful. Please be patient - as our programme has only begun to rollout across the island of Ireland and volunteers in some areas may not yet be organized.
