Looking For Lavin Ancestors from Roscommon or Sligo

Your grandfather and his family lived in Co. Sligo not far from the Roscommon border. The townland was Creevagh and the civil parish was Kilmactranny. The RC parish was Geevagh. Peter was born  December 14, 1883. See link below to the civil birth record. He had at least four siblings: Maria 1873 Catherina 1878 Patrick 1880 and Elizabeth 1887.

I was not able to locate a civil marriage record for Patrick Lavin and Elizabeth Regan but found a church marriage record in the Ardcarn/Cootehalll parish in Roscommon. The record was located on the subscription site Roots Ireland.

Roger,  thank you for all of your help. You have given me an abundance of vital information that I can use to piece together my ancestry. I have heard that there are a large number of Lavin's in Sligo, now I feel that I might be related. Thanks

In case you're interested, the Lavin/Lavan surname originated in that area, and is now also common in nearby counties such as Mayo.  The modern Irish form is Ó Laimhin or Ó Lamháin.  According to MacLysaght's Surnames of Ireland, those are believed to be modern contractions of the original Irish form, which is believed to have been Ó Flaithimhín, from the Irish word flaitheamh, meaning "ruler", which would make the meaning of the full original name "descendant of the ruler".  They were a sept (a sub-tribe) of the Mac Dermot's (Mac Diarmada), three branches of which ruled in parts of Connacht.  As surnames began to be anglicized, Ó Laimhin / Ó Lamháin was also sometimes anglicized as Hand, through a false etymology deriving it from the Irish word lámh, menaning "hand".

Hi, my name is Kenneth Larvin, the family story I heard was my name should be Lavin but it was changed when the family arrived in Scotland/England. I have traced my Great Grandfather who was "John Larvin" born 1851. I believe he was born in Sligo but I have come to a dead end as I don't know who his parents or siblings were. I have looked on the internet and found flax growers with the name of Larvin which complicates things more. I was also told that we were part of the "Black Irish" and we were descendants of Spanish survivors of the Armada but looking at the history it looks as if there were no survivors as they were all killed by the "Natives" can you help. Hi Peter, I happened on your post by chance. I think my husband may be a relation of yours. We live in Oxhill, the birthplace of Elizabeth Regan. My husband's maternal family is Regan and his great grandfather was a Thomas Regan. I'd love to hear further from you .

Hello Kathleen,

I hope we can help each other out. My Grandfather was John Patrick Larvin 

born 1877 and I think his father was John Lavin, born 1851, somewhere near Swinford, I Think. I have trees on Ancestry and Findmypast although I am not sure of the accuracy.
