Dear Friends of Beagh Parish: I have been trying to find my great great Grandfather, Maurice Kane born around 1800 who married Mary Catherine Mullen around 1838. They had a son, Patrick, around 1839 and immigrated to Quebec, Canada in the mid to late 1850s. Maurice was a farmer and they came to Canada during the potatoe famine. They settled in Bristol, Quebec and I recently was excited to find their tombstone at St Brigit's Parish in Bristol. However, the St Brigit's records do not show their birth place only their Country of birth. I have found seven Maurice Kane's in Griffith's Valuation and one is from Beagh Parish so I am hopeful that this posting will lead me to finding Maurice, Mary Catherine and Patrick's Parish and County of birth.

If anyone recognizes these names or can provide advice on where to search next, I would greatly appreciate hearing from you.

Regards

  • Hi Darleen,

I am terribly sorry for the delay in getting back to you, I was out of the country on holidays. After looking through some of my transcriptions I have made of Beagh parish records, I am afraid to say that I did not find any Maurice Kane in my records. The reason for this is because he was born earlier than records of his existence in the parish would have started. The local parish church of Shanaglish only has surviving records from the year 1851 for baptismal records, and from 1850 for marraiges, both not starting early enough to have records of your ancestors.

I also would be wary about just sticking to the spelling of Kane in your research - I myself know extended family members from the same family that use the spelling Kane and Keane. I am sure there are more variations, so bear that in mind.

As regards as to where to look next, I'm afraid I do not have much idea, but maybe the Tithe Applotment books newly placed online free of charge might help. These pre-date Griffiths Valuation so may be more useful. Here is the url http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/index.jsp

If there is anything else I can help with, please let me know and I am sorry that my response hasn't been more positive. Best of luck!

  • Hi Darlene

In addition to the several Maurice Keanes in the Griffiths Primary Valuation of the 1850s, Beagh parish has a Francis Cain of Castle Lodge and an Edmund Keane of Lacty Shaughnessy in the Tirhe list of 1826.

I would have to echo the advice to look at all spellling variations, but I suspect you know that already. In addition you mgiht find a Y-DNA sample useful if you have a direct male line descendant of Maurice Keane willing to provide a sample. See the Cain DNA project at www.familytreedna.com/public/Cain-Caine as some of your kin may be there already. I suspect that your Keanes may be the same genetically as my Cains.
