Hello, my name is Gwendolyn Reagan, and I live in California (born and raised). I’ve traced my Irish roots on my father’s mother’s side of the family to the Neill/Neil family, out of County Monaghan. I have names and birth dates going back to the 1700’s! However, I’m not aware of any relatives who still live in Ireland. I’m getting married in June and we are hoping to make a trip to Ireland later this year, for our honeymoon. I would love to find relatives before making the trip, so that I could potentially meet some while I’m there. Here are a few of the names I have of relatives born in County Monaghan, beginning with my 3rd great grandfather - Richard Neil B: 01 Jan 1800 County, Monaghan, Ireland D: 03 Dec 1878 Minnesota, USA. All his siblings were born in County Monaghan as well - the oldest was Jane Neil/Neill born May 13, 1797. Of course their father, James Neil/Neill Sr was born in County Monaghan ca. 1771. If anyone is related to the people I’ve listed or any of the siblings of Richard/children of James, please contact me. Thank you, Gwendolyn

  • Dear Gcianna:

Thank you for your post to the Ireland Reaching Out message board and welcome to the site!

I have found a baptism record for Richard O'Neill of Clones with parents noted as Martin O'Neill and Martha Kells.  This is a Church of Ireland record.  The date of baptism is:  25 December 1825.  The residence is Carneyhome, Clones, County Monaghan, and the division is noted as Aghardumsee.

He has a sister named Jane Anne O'Neill who is baptised on the 28 October 1827 to the same couple (the mother's name is noted as Matty Kells).  Her address is also Carneyhome, Clones, County Monaghan.  These two records are transcribed on Roots Ireland which is a subscription site.  The website address is:  www.rootsireland.ie

The above two children were the only two that I could find born to this couple.  The Clones Church of Ireland records are available in the local Church of Ireland parish office in Clogher diocese.  There are also records held at the PRONI office (Public Records Office of Northern Ireland in Belfast).  You can contact them at the link below:

If you need any further assistance, please let me know.

    Kind regards,

    Jane.

Hi Jane, Thank you for your reply! As far as I know I’ve not found any of my relatives with the names Martha or Martin. My Richard Neil (Neill, O’Neil) had a father named James(born in Monaghan ca. 1771), and there was also a brother, named James Jr. The mother was Mary Bull born 1774. Other siblings of Richard (children of James Sr and Mary Bull) are Jane born May 13, 1797, Mary Ann born April 5th 1799, Eliza born November 10, 1801, John born October 10th, 1804, James Jr born October 21, 1805, Ellen born August 10, 1807, Edward born June 10, 1809, twins Sallie and Sarah born August 6, 1811, Sophia born July 6th 1813, Samuel born July 16, 1815, Lucinda born October 21, 1817 and Hannah born October 15, 1819. If you happen to find anything on any of these people, please let me know. Thank you, Gwendolyn

  • Hi Gcianna:  If you are interested, creating an Ancestor profile of any member of this family might be useful for your research.  All our XO Chronicle profiles are available to read for our members, and often others are also researching the same families or the same locations.  They may be able to assist you with research as a result.  The link to create an Ancestor profile is here:  https://irelandxo.com/ireland-xo/history-and-genealogy/ancestor-database

If you have any other questions, please let me know.  I only saw this message today for some reason.

    All the best,

    Jane
